NEW YORK, NY.- SN37 announced the extension of American Black Beauty, Vol. 1 by Micaiah Carter. The work will be on view until April 24, 2022.
American Black Beauty is a heartfelt exhibition that brings together Carters fashion work, recent personal work, and archival ephemera from his late father. According to Carter, the show's title is a reflection of his exploration into the spectrum of beauty within the Black community, for which there are far too few examples. In presenting his images of young family members alongside his high fashion images, Carter hopes to make children like his niece feel represented in the mainstream.
Carters father, a Vietnam veteran, died of prostate cancer in 2021 and the heart of this show and Micaiahs new work is a creative response to this loss. The inclusion of Carters home videos and his fathers archival photographs is an ode to the role his father played in his life; he was a constant supporter of his work. Following his passing, Carter turned to photography to reconnect more deeply with his family, bringing a new vehicle for joy as he works through his grief. This show honors his fathers life and impact, while looking ahead to the future of young Black generations.
SN37 has made an intentional decision to donate the proceeds of each exhibition to the organization of their artists choosing; the proceeds from the sale of the works in Carters show Carters show will be donated to Agent Orange Record to provide support for Vietnam Veterans that have been impacted by Agent Orange. Works can also be purchased directly at sn37.shop.
American photographer/director Micaiah Carter has quickly emerged as one of the most admired artists of his generation. His oeuvre, captured with sophisticated use of color and light, communicates honesty and raw emotion in a way that looks and feels utterly timeless equal parts nostalgia and forward-looking, yet also completely of the moment. He has shot for publications such as Vogue, WSJ, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, GQ and Wonderland, among others. His commercial clients include brands such as Pyer Moss, Nike, Apple, Thom Browne, MAC, Warby Parker, Spotify and Samsung.
Carters work transcends the page and screen, blending fine art, fashion, portraiture and street photography. His beautiful imagery of Black men and women, in particular, has helped draw attention to the significant void in representation, on both sides of the camera. Carter is one of several leading artists advancing these important issues. In addition to his work, he is one of the founders of See In Black, an artist collective highlighting and supporting the advancement of Black photographers.
