Mayborn Museum Complex To Open Bush Photo Exhibit

WACO, TX.-Baylor University, in conjunction with the Mayborn Museum Complex and The Waco Tribune-Herald, will host an exhibition featuring photographs of President George W. Bush during his visits to Central Texas. "Presidential Retreat: Images of George W. Bush at Baylor, Waco and Crawford" will be open from Aug. 5 through Sept. 30 at the Mayborn Museum, located at 1300 S. University Parks Dr. on the Baylor campus.

The sampling of the more than 6,000 images captured by Waco Tribune-Herald photographers Rod Aydelotte, Duane A. Laverty and Jerry Larson, gives visitors a glimpse into the history-making events that have taken place in Central Texas since then-Texas Gov. Bush purchased his 1,600-acre ranch near Crawford in 1999.

President Bush has hosted foreign dignitaries, held summits and relaxed with cabinet members at the ranch. Coverage of these events has produced poignant images of the 43rd president and First Lady Laura Bush with their guests, amid the Texas backdrop of cacti and bluebonnets at the Western White House and the surrounding area.

The photographs capture the memories of the last six years and President Bush's impact here, including images of the president boarding Air Force One, giving a thumbs-up sign after voting at the Crawford Volunteer Fire Station, and of Stetson-wearing members of Chinese President Jiang Zemin's entourage.

Waco Tribune-Herald photographers have been on hand as President Bush has left his "boot print" in Central Texas and have made this exhibit possible.

Waco native Aydelotte joined Tribune-Herald in 1981. He is a 1977 Baylor graduate and has covered the Atlanta Olympics and the siege of the Branch Davidian compound. He has won a Texas Headliners award, as well as an Associated Press award for spot news photography.

Laverty has worked for the Tribune-Herald for 10 years. A 1985 graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, he has been honored for photography from the Headliners Club of Texas, Associated Press Managing Editors and the National Press Photographers Association.

Larson joined the Tribune-Herald one year ago. He is a 1995 graduate of Texas State Technical College and a member of the National Press Photographers Association. Larson's work won a 2000 Associated Press Managing Editors first place award for photojournalism.
