LONDON.- With almost 2,000 prints sold, Pictures for Purpose has registered sales of €252.350, following its third print sale fundraiser, organised in aid of those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Foundation, which launched in 2020, generates financial support and awareness for urgent causes through the medium of photography. All prints, priced at €125, were sold in an open edition over a two-week period, from 10-24 March.

With the generous support of 45 international artists, the third edition of Pictures for Purpose sought to raise proceeds for non-profit organisation World Central Kitchen (WCK). As with previous editions of the fundraiser, the participating artists could opt to receive 25% of the proceeds from the sale of their prints. Whilst an overwhelming majority of artists asked that all proceeds go to the organisation in question, the model remains a valuable lifeline for some – particularly those artists directly affected by the unfolding events in Ukraine.

WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN

Founded by Spanish chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen is a team of food first responders, providing fresh meals to those who need them most in humanitarian, climate, and community crises. In each instance, their work asserts that a nourishing meal in a time of crisis is more than a plate of food – it's hope, it's dignity, and it's a sign that someone cares.

Via an extensive network of field kitchens, caterers, food trucks and restaurants, WCK has served over 3 million meals since the invasion began, both in Ukraine and a series of neighbouring countries.

PICTURES FOR PURPOSE ARTISTS 2022

In many cases, the artists who donated a print towards this cause have a strong connection with the region. A number of the participants were born, raised, or are based in Ukraine, whilst others have felt the reverberations of the crisis unfold in neighbouring countries. Equally, some of the artists – including Rineke Dijkstra and Alec Soth – were invited to contribute specific works they created in Ukraine. Beyond those with more overt connections to the country, some of the featured artists simply wanted to join in support of the cause, many of whom offered images that speak to notions of solidarity, freedom and resistance.

Foundation Pictures for Purpose will continue its efforts in the future by raising awareness and vital funds for pressing causes through the medium of photography in various ways.
