5 Innovative Tips for Improving Workplace Safety

It is frequently the case that people do not really consider their own or the safety of others in a workplace, simply because they tend to think that there is no way that something absolutely catastrophic could happen. Until it indeed does happen, leaving everyone in shock. That is when the real questions start to arise. What must be done in order to ensure maximum safety in a workplace? Frontline workers have to deal with these questions in particular, as they are most likely to be put in a dangerous situation in their day-to-day work. What are some smart ways to boost workplace safety?

Set up emergency protocols

When something raises its ugly head in a workplace, there is usually one bigger problem than the immediate danger itself and that is the insufficient time to adequately react. That is precisely why every workplace should adopt personalized emergency safety protocols that can be executed almost routinely in a dangerous situation. These protocols should fit the specific job requirements and conditions for a given domain. It is reported that in 2019 alone there were around 2,800 fatalities that occurred in a workplace. Good emergency protocols are designed in such a way that they provide a hasty answer even to something unexpected such as natural disasters. A good protocol further ensures that proper insurance is used, risks are timely identified, and quality emergency response and evacuation training is in check. All of this makes the place of work optimal and safe, which reduces unnecessary stress and keeps the workers happy.

Invest in high-quality workwear

Whatever the profession may be, it is necessary to provide the workers with appropriate work equipment. Accidents and injures can happen even in the most trivial of situations, such as simply slipping or falling because improper footwear was provided or the person was not given a high-vis vest so they were not easy to spot. Luckily, there is now men’s workwear in Australia available, which covers all the demands of a typical workday, from high-visibility vests to high-quality coveralls and pants. Heavy-duty work can now be done comfortably knowing that the workwear is sturdy and flexible enough to carry out daily work demands, while all looking stylish as well.

Reduce stress

Stress in the workplace is a given. However, the degree to which stress is acceptable and healthy should also be a standard. As the economic demands grow so does the stress. One thing about stress is that it comes in many shapes and sizes, and it is not so self-evident when it’s too much. It can be induced by layoffs, downsizing, and overtime work. More often than not, it results in burnout and varying health problems, and most of all, it can lead to workplace accidents due to low energy and focus. It is up to the employers to seriously consider reducing unnecessary work-related stress, which can be done in various ways, such as openly communicating with the employees and providing professional counseling. This eliminates any issues which might arise, such as personal or family issues that make their way into the workplace, conflicts with coworkers, or even financial counseling. All of this can ensure a safer working environment in the long run as the workers are less likely to cause accidents.

Take time off

The number one way to reduce stress buildup and prevent possible burnouts is taking regular breaks. This might not appeal to the employers because they might believe that this contributes to downtime. But the name of the game is long-term and sustainable productivity. That is precisely what is encouraged by OSHA. This keeps the workers satisfied and more productive while eliminating horrible hazards and accidents that can emerge out of improper rest and accumulated fatigue.

Conduct surveys

Since work-related safety is meant for the workers, it would only make sense to reach out to these people who are facing the dangers firsthand, in order to gain a deeper understanding of what the potential hazards precisely are. This can easily be done by conducting surveys. These surveys can be spread throughout the year, once a month, quarterly, or two times per year. The goal of the survey is to find out how employees feel about the current safety protocols, how effective the emergency response training is, how difficult it is to report any concerns, or if there is something that can be completely replaced or refined.

There are several protocols recommended by organizations such as OSHA. However, at the end of the day, the responsibility regarding safety comes down to every single individual in the workplace. This responsibility can be adequately addressed by implementing steps like setting up company-specific emergency protocols, using quality workwear, minimizing stress by taking breaks, and identifying future problems by taking surveys. With all of this in mind, the workplace no longer has to be an accident-ridden nightmare.
