NEW YORK, NY.- Phillips announced an expanded sale calendar for Editions auctions, following a record-breaking year in 2021. This year, three additional live auctions have been added to the schedule for a total of seven live auctions across New York and London. The first newly scheduled auction on 11 March is the company’s first New York Editions sale of the year and will present a diverse selection of over 100 contemporary lots including editions by David Hockney, KAWS, Cindy Sherman, Christopher Wool, and Kehinde Wiley with 20% of the sale consisting of works on paper by Kara Walker, Thomas Nozkowski, Larry Zox, Marcel Dzama, William Pope L., Purvis Young, Nicolas Krushenick and more. An exhibition will be open to the public from 4-11 March in the lead up to the sale at 432 Park Avenue, concurrent with the New Now sale. The New York Spring season continues with a blockbuster April auction to be held on 19-20 April at 432 Park Avenue and on 25 June, livestreamed from Southampton, with bidding available in person and online.

Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Deputy Chairmen and Co-Heads of Editions, said, “2021 was a historic year for the Editions market as we realized our highest annual total ever. The momentum carried straight through to this year with a white glove Evening Sale in London. Expanding our annual live auction calendar allows us to meet the ever-increasing demand from our collectors across the globe, who are eager to acquire rare twentieth century and contemporary prints and multiples. We look forward to presenting these additional live auctions, which will offer a breadth and depth of material seldom seen on the market.”

Leading the sale is an iconic David Hockney lithograph, Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book. Swimming pools became a staple of Hockney’s oeuvre early on in his career. Flying into Los Angeles for the first time in 1963, Hockney looked out of the plane window and was immediately captivated by the striking blues of the countless swimming pools scattered throughout the city below. Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book was created to accompany a publication on the Paper Pools series, emphasizing the interconnected nature of Hockney’s swimming pool images, despite the varied media he employed.

KAWS’ What Party set of seven lithographs made in 2020 revisits KAWS’ iconic character Bidendum, The Michelan Man. These intimate portraits of Bidendum present the character with an older expression in seven different bold, colorways. What Party is also the name of the KAWS wellattended mega retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum.

A significant group of works by Cindy Sherman will also be on offer. Spanning the 1970s to 2000s, this selection of all Untitled photographs by Cindy Sherman presents the artist as some of her most recognizable characters. Untitled, 1975 is from a series of headshots Sherman made to show the process of turning one character into another. “At that time I was merely interested in the use of make-up on a face as paint used on a blank canvas. I was experimenting with several types of characters – i.e. starting with an old person who then gradually became a drag queen.”

Additionally, the March auction brings together fine examples of hard-edge abstraction in print and works on paper by marquee artists like Ellsworth Kelly, Leon Polk Smith, Larry Zox, Nicholas Krushenick, Robert Mangold and Frank Stella. All produced in the 1960s and 70s, this sampling of images, all sharing a common formal language, illuminates this key American Post-War genre.

Other highlights include editions by Francis Bacon, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Bruce Nauman, Ed Ruscha, Peter Saul, Kenny Scharf, Andy Warhol, Kehinde Wiley and more.
