EVANSTON, IL.- The Perspective Gallery, Evanston, IL will present “Through A New Lens”, an exhibition of photographs by seven internationally-recognized iPhoneographers on view beginning Thursday, January 6, 2022. The exhibition, curated by museum professional, art historian and photographer, Gina Costa, demonstrates a broad range of styles and approaches used by mobile technology. Works range from traditional, “straight” photographs, to abstract and highly “apped” works of art. Visitors to the exhibition will observe the incredible span of possibilities mobile technology permits.

The evolution of mobile photography can be understood as the logical next step of developments in the history of photography. Technically, what preceded the mobile photography movement led naturally to its adoption, becoming an important world-wide art movement. The camera on mobile phones has redefined picture-making within this historical arc, and has shifted the discourse and boundaries of what we consider a “photograph”.

This exhibition provides a small glimpse to how a mobile device is not only a convenient device in one’s pocket, but also a powerful creative tool harnessed by these artists to redefine how we understand picture-making. The question before us now is: What is the next technical advancement mobile photography is paving the way for?

Exhibiting internationally known photographers are: Gina Costa, Armineh Hovanesian , Juta Jazz, Manuela Matos Montiero, Stephen Murphy, Oola Cristina Omichi Smith, and Jane Schultz.

In-Person Opening Reception: Saturday, January 8, 2022, 4-7:00 p.m. CST (Covid-19 protocols, including proof of vaccination, will be observed.)

Zoom lecture with Gina Costa and several of the artists on Sunday, January 23, 2 p.m. CST
