FORTALEZA, BRAZIL.- Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura presents Darío Álvarez Basso, on view through August 28, 2005. The exhibition assembles 45 paintings and two installations which offers the possibility to examine his most notable work from the middle eighties to this date.

Above and beyond the contemporary movements Álvarez Basso’s work has been compared to, such as abstract expressionism, his painting persistently compel us to return to a never forgotten past, always present by way of the ability to evoke the age-old questions about the role of man towards time and space, about the controversial and enriching relationship between art and reality. That reality melted to the matter, to the colour and the form, with no erudite additions while instinctively linked to a culture, to a gaze and sensibility, is revealed in the works of this creator of images, where man and things discuss to themselves with conscious renounce. His use of matter as a pictorical subject, the inspiration in the power of expression of the primitive cultures, the symbolic pursuit of fleetingness of time, all combine with some of the constant features of Spanish painting, renewed by his various personal experiences, open to all kinds of distant and exotic realities.
