Christie's Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art department achieves market leadership in Asia

HONG KONG.- On 3 December, Christie's held three live auctions for the category – The Chang Wei-Hwa Collection of Archaic Jades Part III - Spring and Autumn & Warring States Periods, The Songde Tang Collection - Song Dynasty Ceramics, and Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, generating a combined total of HK$351,020,000/ US$45,270,416.

Sale Highlights: The Chang Wei-Hwa Collection of Archaic Jades Part III

• The auction was 100% sold, totaling HK$79,887,500/ US$10,306,822 with a hammer price of 251% above low estimate.

• Avid bidding was witnessed throughout the whole sale, with the top lot and several leading lots of the collection surpassing multiples of their pre-sale low estimates, including:

Top Lot of the Sale – Lot 2713

A VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT CARVED JADE DRAGON-FORM PENDANT LATE WARRING STATES PERIOD, CIRCA 300-221 BC Price Realised: HK$15,250,000/ US$1,967,505. Against the pre-sale low estimate of HK$2,800,000/ US$361,247

Lot 2754: AN EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE JADE INSET BRONZE GE-HALBERD BLADE LATE SPRING AND AUTUM PERIOD-EARLY WARRING STATES PERIOD, CIRCA 570-400 BC Price Realised: HK$9,850,000/ US$1,270,814. Against the pre-sale low estimate of HK$1,800,000/ US$232,230

Sale Highlights: The Songde Tang Collection - Song Dynasty Ceramics

• The auction realised HK$24,731,250/ US$3,190,744, with sell-through rates of 95% by lot and 99% by value, and a hammer price of 213% above low estimate.

• The celebrated collection sparked intense competition, and the star lot of the sale and other notable lots exceeded multiple times of their pre-sale low estimates, including:

A RARE QINGBAI MEIPING AND COVER SONG DYNASTY (960-1279) Price Realised: HK$4,375,000/ US$564,448. Against the pre-sale low estimate of HK$500,000/ US$64,508

Lot 2839: A FINE AND RARE DING MOULDED ‘PEONY’ FOLIATE-RIM BOWL NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY (960-1127) Price Realised: HK$2,375,000/ US$306,415. Against the pre-sale low estimate of HK$700,000/ US$90,312

Sale Highlights: Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art

• The auction fetched HK$246,401,250/ US$31,772,850.

• In addition to the top lot of this sale and of the sale series - A FINE AND VERY RARE PAIR OF CELADON-GLAZED OVOID VASES WITH CHILONG APPLIQUES which sold for HK$26.7M/ US$3.4M (shown on cover page), the diverse offerings in this sale invited intense bidding for other top-performing highlights including:

Lot 2957: AN IMPORTANT AND EXTREMELY RARE IMPERIAL MING CLOISONNE ENAMEL BRACKET-LOBED BOX AND COVER JINGTAI INCISED SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1450-1456) Price Realised: HK$26,050,000/ US$3,359,085

Lot 2941: AN IMPORTANT AND VERY RARE EARLY-MING BLUE AND WHITE PEAR-SHAPED BOTTLE VASE, YUHUCHUNPING YONGLE PERIOD (1403-1425) Price Realised: HK$21,850,000/ US$2,817,505

The Hosokawa Family Collection established solid prices, led by lot 3080 - A SET OF FIVE CHICKEN BLOOD SOAPSTONE SEALS FOR PRINCE DING, DATED TO THE JIAQING 18TH YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1813 AND OF THE PERIOD, which sold for HK$2,125,000/ US$274,014 against the pre-sale low estimate of HK$300,000/ US$274,014.

Christie’s offered lot 2976 - A RARE AND IMPORTANT ARCHAIC BRONZE FOOD VESSEL, FANGZUOGUI, EARLY WESTERN ZHOU PERIOD, 11TH-10TH CENTURY BC, which sold for HK$5,000,000/ US$644,738, alongside lot 2952 - A RARE CLOISONNE ENAMEL ‘DRAGON’ TRIPOD CENSER AND COVER, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722), achieving HK$1,875,000/ US$241,777. The proceeds for both went to benefit The Robert Chang Art Education Charitable Foundation.
