GLEN COVE, NY.- Roland Auctions NY in Glen Cove, NY presented a very special two-day auction event on November 5th & 6th, featuring the collection of prominent Southampton, NY antiques dealer Jay Waldmann, whose shop Waldmann Jewelry and Antiques graced Main Street in Southampton Village for over twenty years.

The highly anticipated two-day auction offered over 1,000 lots, including 18th & 19th Century fine paintings, decorative arts, silver, bronze, porcelain and more, all curated over the years by Jay Waldmann, known as the premiere dealer in the Hamptons. As recently reported, Waldmann sold his building on Main Street in Southampton after opening his doors 23 years ago, and was now offering pieces from his exquisite collection for the first time in auction.

As Roland Auctions’ Bill Roland recently stated “I would honestly call this a very well, especially curated collection because it consists of so many objects which were selected personally by Jay, and he ran a very high-end gallery.”

Some items getting the most pre-auction attention were the Suit of Armor, Nuremberg, Germany Circa 1570, complete suit of armor for field use, made in Nurnberg (Nuremberg), Germany, circa 1570, original in all parts; the helmet with a one-piece forged bell and a pointed visor, the chest piece with rust hook and rosette-shaped forge's mark, the entire arm and leg set with shoulder. Nurnberg inspection mark on the arm. This is an extremely rare and, in its completeness, high-quality German suit of armor, of museum importance, which sold for $21,250 and the Monumental Louis XVI Gilt Bronze Clock, late 18th century, modeled as a Neoclassical urn flanked by two allegorical putti, the dial with two wind holes and signed "Ferdinand Berthood" (French, 1727-1807), clockmaker to the King and Navy. [26 1/4" H x 17" W x 9" D], which went for $20,000.

Fine art also took the spotlight including the Heyman Dullaert (1636-1684) St. Jerome in his Study, Oil on Panel 17th century oil on board painting of Saint Jerome in his study, being an interior scene with trompe l'oeil elements, the Saint in Cardinal's attire reading a book in Latin and attended by his loyal lion, whose paw he healed. Affixed panel to reverse. [Sight: 38 1/4" H x 49" W; Frame: 42 1/2" H x 53), selling for $8125 and an Adolph Schreyer, (German 1828-1899) Arabs on Horseback, oil on Canvas painting of an Orientalist scene of Arab men on horseback, signed lower left, by Adolf Schreyer (German, 1828-1899), circa 1870. [Sight: 34" H x 48 1/2" W; Frame: 42 3/4" H x 57 1/4" W], which sold for $5937.

One vintage Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk, with interior fittings of drawers and hangers. Classic Louis Vuitton designed light and dark leather with wood supports. [46" H x 22" W x 22" D] went for $12,500, with another vintage Louis Vuitton trunk, early 20th century monogram canvas steamer trunk, with overall hand-stenciled monogram logo with leather and wood accents, yellow stripe and initials "J.N.W.", the interior fitted with six drawers, pant hanger rod and rotating shoe compartment. [43 3/4" H x 21 3/4" W x 21 3/4" D] selling for $10,000.

Some of the rare and unusual silver items in the auction were the most sought after, including a Russian / Cuban Silver Cigar Box Faux wood grain and stamp engraved box, top reading "Habana" with all over Cyrillic writing. Hallmarked with head and "KC" maker. 18.4 ozt. [2" H x 7 1/2" W x 4 1/2" D], which sold for $4,062, a Buccellati Sterling Centerpiece Bowl, acanthus leaf mounted, with flare top on oval stepped base. Signed on bottom Gianmaria Buccellati, made in Italy. 48.2 ozt. [7 1/2" H x 10" W x 8 1/2" D], selling for $3750 and a German Silver Dragon Form Covered Box/Cup, 19th century with elaborate design of figure riding a winged dragon with chicken legs on pedestal with climbing frog and lizards. 27.9 ozt. [9" H x 6" W x 5" D]. going for $5000.

Exceptional decorative arts also did very well over the two day sale, with an Andre-Vincent BECQUEREL (French,1893-1981), Bronze Sculpture, Art Deco patinated bronze sculpture of a panther by a tree stump, [16" H x 25" W x 7" D] selling for $10,500, an Emmanuel FREMIET: Gorilla & Lady -Bronze Sculpture, Bronze sculpture of a gorilla carrying a woman, signed to base, by Emmanuel Fremiet (French, 1824-1910). [17" H x 15" Diam.] that sold for $5625, A French Neoclassical Bronze & Malachite Clock, 19th century, Russian or French, depicting a boy with scythe and basket sitting atop the case with scrolling and allegorical elements. [23 1/4" H x 11" W x 6 1/2" D], going for $4062, an After Canova: Alabaster Bust of a Woman. Detail based on "The Dancer" located in the Canova Museum in Italy. Antonio Canova (Italian 1757-1822) inscribed to front on plinth base. [Overall: 20" H x 12 1/2" W x 8 3/4" D) selling for $5937 and a pair of 19th C. Candlesticks/Urns, convertible candlesticks/urns, the lids with berry and acanthus finials which flip to reveal flower form candle cups, the urns with elephant and mascaron details, the bases with classical motifs. [14 3/4" H x 4 3/4" W x 4 1/4" D] that sold for $5312. And, a pair of Venetian-Style Grotto Arm Chairs, silver painted arm chairs with shell-form backs and seats. [35" H x 22" W x 17" D], which sold for $8750.

An exquisite private collection of jewelry from an Upper East Side home was also included in the two-day auction, with highlights like a Victorian Silver on Gold, Diamond and Pearl Pin, having Old Mine cut diamonds, one 8mm round pearl, and three 16mm oval pearls, the diamonds measuring one 1ct. on top; with one .80ct. below; with two .60ct., two .50ct., two .40ct., two .25ct., two .15ct., and two .10ct. on either side; one .25ct at bottom; and approximately one hundred twenty-six other stones throughout. Total diamond weight approximately 18ct. Three of the four pearls are GIA certified natural. Late 19- early 20th century, American.. [2 1/4" H x 2 1/16" W], which sold high for $18,750 and a set of four Platinum, Diamond & Sapphire Cufflinks, circular Art Deco cufflinks, having twenty-five diamonds, four square marquise sapphires, and four accent sapphires in each. Total weight of diamonds 1.5ct.; 5.6 dwt. inclusive. 20th century, American. In good condition. Sold for $4,062.

This auction of the collection of Jay Waldmann is one of many Roland Auctions’ single-owner, specialized sales throughout the year, in addition to monthly estate sales. After more than four decades based in Manhattan, Roland Auctions relocated to Long Island’s North Shore, the historic “Gold Coast” in 2018.
