NEW YORK.- Christie's just held the Jay T. Snider Collection of Historical Americana auction in New York. The total sold at the auction was $6,318,720.
Chris Coover, Senior Specialist of the Books and Manuscripts department: “Today’s very gratifying results testify to the enduring interest of many collectors in the books, manuscripts and maps which record the eventful exploration, settlement and history of America. The collector’s careful insistence on copies in fine original condition was reflected in the high prices realized. A group of remarkable 17th-century maps of New York and New Jersey attracted considerable attention from bidders and sold for strong prices to the New Jersey State Archives. Several important color-plate books achieved record prices, notably a superb copy of James O. Lewis’, Aboriginal Portfolio (1836-1838), and Hayden’s and Moran’s Yellowstone National Park (1876), with panoramic color lithographs.”
