Freeman’s November 10 auction features many fine examples of early American furnituremaking, including a William & Mary carved oak “Hadley” chest (Lot 51; estimate: $10,000-20,000).

PHILADELPHIA, PA.- Freeman’s American Furniture, Folk and Decorative Arts auction, beginning at 11am on Wednesday, November 10, features a fine selection of American silver, furniture, paintings, flags, and objects illustrating the customs, politics, and design sensibilities of early America, and also includes the American National Flag Collection of Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn, MD.

Lynda Cain, Head of Department, said, “This is a unique opportunity for flag collectors and I am delighted to be offering this collection this November.”

AMERICAN FLAGS

With the American National Flag Collection of Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn, MD, Freeman’s continues its excellent track record of presenting single-owner collections at auction. A foremost expert and dealer of the American National Flag, Kohn has been amassing his collection for over 35 years; Freeman’s presents such highlights as a rare Civil War–era “Shooting Star” pattern flag commemorating Kansas Statehood from 1861-1863 (Lot 16; estimate: $30,000-50,000) and a rare 13-Star American National Flag with 21 “Scattered Stars” (Lot 4; estimate: $25,000-50,000).

AMERICAN SILVER

American Furniture, Folk and Decorative Arts presents silver collectors with ample opportunities to purchase rare objects from early American history. A fine silver coffee pot with Rococo detailing designed by Philadelphia-based William Hollingshead circa 1770 is a unique work of early American silversmithing (Lot 88; estimate: $20,000-30,000). Also of Philadelphia origin is a silver covered tankard designed by Philip Syng, Jr. circa 1750 (Lot 85; estimate: $12,000-18,000); another highlight is a rare silver beaker from Boston-based John Coney, circa 1687 (Lot 58; estimate: $10,000-15,000).

ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

Freeman’s November 10 auction features many fine examples of early American furnituremaking, including a William & Mary carved oak “Hadley” chest (Lot 51; estimate: $10,000-20,000), a Federal inlaid and figured mahogany pier table (Lot 137; estimate: $15,000-25,000), and a Kellogg/Belden Family Queen Anne carved cherry high chest (Lot 68; estimate: $10,000-15,000).

RECENT SUCCESSES, UPCOMING HIGHLIGHTS

As the nation’s oldest auction house, Freeman’s is uniquely positioned as the premier destination for the buying and selling of works of American history. Freeman’s July 2021 single-lot auction of a rare copy of the Declaration of Independence achieved a historic $4.42M sale price, a result that marks the second-highest price ever paid at auction for any copy of the document.

Freeman’s upcoming October 25 auction, The Alexander Hamilton Collection of John E. Herzog, presents 44 lots of significant documents, first edition pamphlets, and autographed material that delves into both the professional and personal life of American statesman and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.
