Christie's Prints & Multiples Sale now live for bidding

LONDON.- Prints & Multiples, the online-only sale offering a wide selection of works spanning from the late 19th century to the present day, is live for bidding from 16 to 28 September 2021. The online auction showcases American Pop Art screenprints from the second half of the 20th century, headlined by Andy Warhol’s complete set of ten Electric Chairs (1971, estimate £120,000-180,000). A defining image of his seminal body of work: Death and Disasters is presented alongside Mickey Mouse (1981, estimate: £100,000-150,000). Warhol admired Walt Disney and he included his most famous cartoon character as one of the ten protagonists of his portfolio Myths.

Other coveted and iconic Warhol works in the sale include Tomato Soup, from: Campbell's Soup I (1968, estimate: £50,000-70,000), the full set Truck (1985, estimate: £50,000-70,000), Red Lenin (1987, estimate: £50,000-70,000), Jane Fonda (1982, estimate: £15,000-20,000) and Ted Turner (1986, estimate: £15,000-25,000) who were famously married in the 1990’s. Robert Indiana’s complete Book of Love (1996, estimate: £60,000-80,000) is also included in the American Pop Art selection.

A significant group of German Expressionist works – including property from the Deutsche Bank Collection are also offered in the sale, highlighted by Erich Heckel’s psychological self-portrait, Männerbildnis (1918-19, estimate: £60,000-80,000). Further Expressionist examples include Edward Munch’s On the Bridge (1912-12, estimate: £100,000-150,000), Emil Nolde’s Mühle am Wasser (1926, estimate: £25,000-35,000), Max Beckmann’s Selbstbildnis mit steifem Hut (1921, £50,000-70,000) and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Frankfurter Dom (1916, estimate: £12,000-18,000).

Modern masters such as Picasso are well represented too: a rare set of Dix Pochoirs (circa 1920, estimate: £100,000-150,000) is offered alongside an eclectic group of portraits, including Femme au Fauteuil No. 4 (1948, estimate: £40,000-60,000). A selection of Henri Matisse graphics from the estate of Jacquelyne Miller Matisse completes the Modern section.

Among the highlights from the post-war period are a rare set of Cretti (1971, estimate: £60,000-80,000) by Alberto Burri and David Hockney’s Contrejour in the French Style (1974, estimate: £50,000-70,000). This work was created while Hockney was living in Paris, where he had the opportunity to work with the renowned etcher Aldo Crommelynck, who had collaborated closely with Picasso.

The Contemporary section features Gerhard Richter’s shimmering abstract creations, Julian Opie’s Watching Suzanne (2006, estimate: £30,000-50,000) and a full set of Christopher Wool’s My House I, II & III (2000, estimate: £40,000-60,000).

Highlights from Prints & Multiples sale are on view at Christie’s headquarters in London as part of the pre-sale exhibition from 17 to 27 September 2021.
