NEW YORK, NY.- Nara Roesler announced the representation of Manoela Medeiros (Rio de Janeiro, 1991). In her practice, Medeiros articulates a conceptual post-medium approach to painting, through sculpture, performance, and installation work. Pursuing a hybrid framework for the pictorial, Medeiros questions artistic media by going beyond their conventional formats, producing paintings and in situ installations that explore the relationships between space, time, and the corporeality of art and of the viewer.
During her process of creation, Medeiros takes into account the material and structural details of the places around her, engaging in an archeological process of excavation whereby she scrapes the surfaces to reveal the underlying matter. With this, the artist attributes a sense of organicity to the space, turning architecture its own body, one that is specific to the experience of art.
According to the artist, "each space carries history and intentions. Because of this, the exhibition space's architecture, the way in which it is constructed, and how light might invade it, take on a new meaning during my process of work. I seek to entwine them so that the public cannot discern my work from the space.
Manoela Medeiros was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1991. She currently lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, and Paris, France.
