SANTA FE, NM.- Gerald Peters Contemporary is presenting Emergent, a solo exhibition of Santa Fe-based artist James Marshall. Featuring nearly a dozen new ceramic sculptures, Emergent continues the artists interest and exploration of the plurality of form. Fueled by minimalist aesthetics and the potential for an ordinary object to shift dimensions and space, Marshalls compelling forms display a multiplicity of shapes.
Emergent evolved out of a collection of stones shelved in the artists studio. Initially drawn to the aesthetics of the smooth, simple forms, Marshall was further compelled by the fine rock strata. The long parallel lines mark the movement of elements shifting, moving and settling. These transitional markers echo Marshalls decades-long interest in liminality. In the artists words, There is a deep beauty that resides inside of the indeterminate, the saturated chroma, the light that radiates out into the life. A life where everything is what it is, and nothing is what it seems. Where color, energy, light and form merge into one. That is where I do my work.
Building upon the unique and technically demanding glazing methods the artist employed for his solo exhibition at Gerald Peters Contemporary in 2017, Marshall continues to push the technical boundaries of his surfaces. Sculptures with delicately painted glazes interrupted by contrasting lines offer a visual metamorphosis of form.
Marshall received his MFA at the University of Michigan and has exhibited extensively during his career with over 15 solo exhibitions around the US. His work is included in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Houston, TX; Nerman Museum, Kansas City, MO; the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Scottsdale, AZ; the Daum Museum, Sedalia, MO plus numerous other public institutions.
