American and European Art | May 3 at 10am CT
The American and European Art auction will offer more than 130 lots of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper from the 19th and 20th centuries with a notable selection of Impressionist landscapes, and Modernist and Ashcan works.
Outstanding works include Léonard Tsuguharu Foujitas Les Deux Amies (lot 72; estimate: $150,000-$250,000). Noteworthy Pennsylvania Impressionist works include Edward Willis Redfields The Peaceful Stream in Winter (lot 51; estimate: $80,000-120,000), Daniel Garbers Near Solebury (lot 50; estimate: $70,000-90,000), and George William Sotters Winter Night (lot 52; estimate: $50,000-70,000). William Glackens Girl with Violin (lot 37; estimate: $70,000-90,000) and Everett Shinns Cherry Lane Theater (lot 33; estimate: $50,000-70,000) are examples of significant Ashcan works.
Post War and Contemporary Art | May 4 at 10am CT
The Post War and Contemporary Art auction will feature more than 80 works spotlighting abstract expressionism, the Hairy Who and the Chicago Imagists, and conceptual art and minimalism. Joan Mitchells Untitled, 1989 (lot 32; estimate: $500,000-700,000), an outstanding example of the artists shift towards lush and transcendent painting late in her career, will lead the auction. Untitled, 1989 features vast created compositional space, which makes the work seem more vibrant than its size, 24 by 19 ¾ inches, might suggest. Through broadly applied blue and shadowy streaks of black and billows of white, the painting moves the gaze to landscape-like references that can be interpreted as the edge of a body of water in the lower right foreground and a pale green shore or horizon in the distant upper left.
Alexander Calders Pyramidal Shapes (lot 35; estimate: $200,000-300,000) and Jim Nutts Did you Hear Something? (lot 51; estimate: $100,000-150,000) are other noteworthy works. Other highlights include Magdalena Abakanowiczs Figure with Open Arms (lot 47; estimate: $40,000-60,000) and Bernard Frizes Rimano (lot 6; $30,000-50,000).
