PARIS.- The Carlton Cannes has entrusted Aguttes Auction House with the sale of the furniture from its iconic suites and reception rooms. This selection from the legendary 5-star hotel, will be offered at auction from 10 to 26 May 2021 on the
Aguttes Online platform.
Inaugurated in 1913 at the initiative of Grand Duke Michel, a member of the imperial Romanov family, with the aim of welcoming the Russian Gotha, the Carlton Cannes closes its doors until 2023 for an ambitious programme of large-scale renovation and extension.
Inseparable from the Cannes Film Festival since its creation in 1939, the hotel where the biggest stars of the cinema as well as illustrious political personalities stayed, has entrusted Aguttes Auction House with the sale of its furniture. More than six hundred lots have been selected and will be dispersed without reserve price.
The sale will take place entirely online for one month, from 10 to 26 May 2021, and will include the hotel's most prestigious pieces.
Aguttes is thus offering everyone the opportunity to appropriate a piece of the legendary of the cinema. Each lot offered for auction will be stamped with a Carlton Cannes stamp in memory of this extraordinary provenance.
Julia Roberts, Alain Delon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Romy Schneider, Barack Obama, Quentin Tarantino, Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt... the biggest names in the world have occupied its suites, resting there between two Cannes screenings or enjoying the incomparable Côte d'Azur lifestyle. The hotel has witnessed more than a century of history, both cinematic and political, and is now laid bare for the delight of collectors and amateurs of the seventh art as well as Cannes glamour.
The Timeless Elegance of Furniture
The furnishings are intimately linked to the personalities who lived within these walls, the hotel having paid tribute to them by renaming the suites after them. Whether regular guests or guest passing through, they have all left their mark on the hotel in their own way.
Wall lamps, consoles, dressing tables, desks, headboards, chandeliers, armchairs, screens and pedestal tables will be offered for sale and will delight those who are lucky enough to take on a part of the myth.
And if the walls could talk... By buying one of the paintings or engravings, silent witnesses and guardians of so many confidences, future buyers might discover one of their many secrets!
Suites with Iconic Names
In the former suite 623, now called "Alfred Hitchcock", Grace Kelly succumbed to the charm of Cary Grant in his film To Catch a Thief.
As a tribute to the actress, the most prestigious suite on the 7th floor was dedicated to her. The "Grace Kelly" suite, redecorated in 2010 in a Grand Siècle atmosphere, has become the most sought-after at the Carlton with its 300 square meters and its lounge overlooking a panoramic sea view. Its dining room which includes a magnificent oblong table, six Louis XVI style chairs and in the taste of a Savonnerie carpet, was the venue for memorable meetings and gatherings. This furniture is now for sale.
It is easy to imagine the conversations that took place in the "Sean Connery" suite. A favourite of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, its 380 square meters is home to four bedrooms, with a chest of drawers in the entrance hall on which the hats, handbags or personal items of many stars were placed.
It is also in this suite that the press junket of the film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Quentin Tarantino, took place in 2019.
Among the must-haves, dressing tables, souvenirs of the glamour of Cannes' fortnights, will undeniably make the womankind happy.
In 2011, during the G20, Barack Obama stayed in suite 523 once occupied by the American commission, paying a vibrant tribute to the history and the first conference of the League of Nations that took place at the hotel 90 years earlier. In each room, there is a symbolic dimension to each of them.
The Reception Rooms, the Epicentre of Cannes' Effervescence
Throughout its history, the Carlton has also distinguished itself by its incredible reception rooms, sometimes chameleons for the various events they house and films to which they lend their sets, sometimes a showcase for the French Art de Vivre.
In the Grand Salon, Alfred Hitchcock shot in 1954 one of the most elegant and glamorous scenes in the film To Catch a Thief, a dinner party in which Grace Kelly appears radiant alongside Cary Grant. In 1955 it was in this room that she would first meet the gaze of Prince Rainier III of Monaco during the promotion of the film.
In 2015, Leonardo DiCaprio, during a charity auction evening in this salon, fought a fierce battle to give a luxury handbag to his mother.
An exceptional chandelier with 30 arms of light, decorated with foliated scrolls and acanthus leaves is one of the lots not to be missed.
The interiors of the hotel were also used as a backdrop for Michel Blanc's film Grosse Fatigue with Carole Bouquet (1994).
The Carlton was also the scene of decisive diplomatic meetings, such as the first conference of the League of Nations, the forerunner of the UN, in 1922. The President of the French Council Aristide Briand and his British counterpart Lloyd Georges met there to discuss the Treaty of Versailles signed two years earlier.
Finally, it was also within the hotel that Coco Chanel met Ernest Beaux and together they created the famous perfume "N°5".
The Carlton Bar and the Carlton Restaurant, Mirrors of Côte d'Azur Epicureanism
Celebrities from all over the world enjoy the prodigious talent of Chef Laurent Bunel, such as Julia Roberts and George Clooney, who had lunch there together to discuss the film Money Monster in 2016 at the Cannes Film Festival. The hotel also has a list of the stars' favourite dishes.
The Carlton Bar is also a great place to relax. In 2017, Pedro Almodovar and Jessica Chastain chatting before going up the stairs and in 2018, Rafael Nadal, visiting Cannes during the Boat Show, also sets his sights on these comfortable blue armchairs to enjoy the house's signature non-alcoholic cocktails.
Although these dishes and cocktails will not be available on the day of the sale, it will however be possible to acquire a bar lounge and curl up for a star aperitif!
Also among the must-have lots were luxurious chandeliers that lit up many magical moments.
Following the closure of the Carlton Cannes in the autumn of 2020, the furniture intended for sale was stored in a secure warehouse under the supervision of The Great Hospitality, a specialist in space planning, in charge of the logistics organisation.
The sale will take place entirely online for one month, from 10 to 26 May 2021 on the Aguttes Online platform.
In 2023, the palace will unveil the new showcase designed by Tristan Auer and architect Richard Lavelle.
