CALGARY, ALBERTA.- The Alberta College of Art & Design is one of only four publicly funded freestanding institutions for artist and designer higher education in Canada. The College has recently entered into a vital new phase in its history; the Board of Governors has embraced a new vision that endorses a model of the institution as a laboratory for experimentation and as a catalyst for research, discourse, and international impact in the arts and emergent cultural fields. The Government of Alberta recently approved a new mandate for the College enabling the offering of graduate degrees, and the institution is mindful of the need to support a next phase of gallery programming that animates our aspirations. The Illingworth Kerr Gallery at ACAD has a forty-five year history as a leading public gallery in Calgary and is recognized for its innovative and challenging exhibition programs.

It is seeking an individual who will lead its gallery and exhibitions programs and manifest an awareness of contemporary discourse in its art and design practices. The successful candidate will have a passion for contemporary art, a significant record of accomplishment in the curatorial/exhibitions field, be conversant with contemporary practice and be an energetic professional with the capacity to translate a vision of excellence in exhibitions programming into a reality.

Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of ACAD gallery and exhibition programming including:- The development and implementation of a gallery approach that is considerate of college programs, and international and Canadian art movements and practices. - The direction and supervision of gallery staff, inclusive of workload assignments, support, evaluation, and collective agreement administration. - The development and administration of gallery operating and capital budgets.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a MFA, MA or PhD in Art History (or equivalent in a relevant field) with a minimum of three to five years curatorial and/or gallery management experience and a familiarity with Canadian and/or international art practice. Essential skills include excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, experience in staff supervision, and the ability to respond to student needs and work effectively with colleagues in a team environment.
