SOTTEVILLE-LČS-ROUEN.- The Frac Normandie Rouen announced the release of its exhibition catalogue Photography to the Test of Abstraction by Hatje Cantz.

It accompanies the triple eponymous exhibition presented simultaneously in three contemporary art venues in France: at the Frac Normandie Rouen, at the Centre Photographique d’Ile-de-France (CPIF) and at Micro Onde - centre d’art de l’Onde.

Photography to the Test of Abstraction explores the multiple facets of the notion of abstraction in the field of contemporary photography. Based on an in-depth analysis of the works and texts from historians, this book proposes to reveal the challenges of this practice, leading us to revisit the premises of photography in its most scientific aspects up to its most recent developments, which involve advanced technologies. Here, renowned artists such as Stan Douglas, Zoe Leonard, Thomas Ruff and Barbara Kasten meet photographers of the younger generation such as Laure Tiberghien, Sebastian Riemer, Anouk Kruithof or Hannah Whitaker and join in the blossoming of an inventive and captivating visual universe.

This catalogue, bilingual, both in French and English is richly illustrated with works by 70 artists exhibited in Photography to the Test of Abstraction until February 22nd 2021.

With works by: Ignasi Aballi, Dove Allouche, Anne-Camille Allueva, Xavier Antin, Pierre Olivier Arnaud, Driss Aroussi, Mustapha Azeroual, Silvia Ballhause, Uta Barth, Taysir Batniji, Eric Baudart, Lionel Bayol-Thémines, Pauline Beaudemont, Jean-Christophe Béchet, Camille Benarab-Lopez, Jesús Alberto Benítez, Walead Beshty, Juliana Borinski, Broomberg & Chanarin, Michel Campeau, Marieta Chirulescu, David Coste, Liz Deschesnes, Stan Douglas, Philippe Durand, Jan Paul Evers, Nicolas Floc’h, Marina Gadonneix, Ryan Gander, Jean-Louis Garnell, Isabelle Giovacchini, Paul Graham, Shannon Guerrico, Wade Guyton, Lukas Hoffmann, Karim Kal, Barbara Kasten, Anouk Kruithof, Isabelle Le Minh, Zoe Leonard, Chris McCaw, Matan Mittwoch, Roman Moriceau, Hanako Murakami, Constance Nouvel, Lisa Oppenheim, Aurélie Pétrel, Diogo Pimentăo, Steven Pippin, Eileen Quinlan, Silvana Reggiardo, Sébastien Reuzé, Evariste Richer, Meghann Riepenhoff, Sarah Ritter, Alison Rossiter, Thomas Ruff, Bettina Samson, Adrian Sauer, Shirana Shahbazi Doriane Souilhol, Zin Taylor, Laure Tiberghien, Wolfgang Tillmans, Thu-Van Tran, Francisco Tropa et James Welling.
