LONDON.- GLORIA: Property from the late Dowager Countess Bathurst, the dedicated collection sale was offered live at
Christies on 22 July. Including the 7 historic paintings from the collection sale sold ahead of the auction to the Bathurst family trustees, the dedicated collection sale totalled £2,132,885.
The overarching collection also includes lots offered across three specialist sales during July, comprising 255 lots in total, and the total achieved by the dedicated collection sale alone is already in excess of the £2 million presale estimate for the combined group.
Highlights from the dedicated Collection sale included Lot 6, A pair of Chinese export reverse-painted mirrors, mid-18th Century, which realised £115,000, against a low estimate of £30,000. Additional outstanding results were achieved by a Queen Anne embroidered bedcover, circa 1710, possibly after a design by James Leman which realised £50,000 against a low estimate of £25,000; Lot 235, an Art Deco Onyx, coral and diamond brooch, Lacloche Freres, which realised £25,000; Lot 208, Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Bauerle (German, 18311912) group portrait realising £35,000.
Charles Cator, Deputy Chairman, Christies International and Adrian Hume-Sayer, Director, Private & Iconic Collections and Head of Sale comment, The strong results from this auction demonstrate the unique appeal of collection sales and the enduring power of provenance. We welcomed many clients, old and new, during the presale exhibition at King Street (operating under current government guidelines) and were delighted to see the fierce competitive bidding in the room on the telephone and online, from 24 countries including China, Japan, Chile and Hong Kong, all of which underpinned this great result.
The combined running total to date is £2,768,135 with two sales still to come. The final combined total will be confirmed following the Important Jewels sale on 30 July.
