The Toebosch Collection at Sotheby's Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM.- On Monday 11 April 2005 Sotheby’s Amsterdam will offer the Collection of the respected Dutch art collector and dealer, Marcel Toebosch. The sale will be a collectors dream, offering a large selection of clocks, musical boxes, furniture and good decorations dating from the 17th to the 19th century. Many items are in perfect condition and have been restored with great attention to detail, offering an opportunity to acquire ready to use antiques.

Already at a very young age, Marcel Toebosch was fascinated by antiques and made his first acquisitions. Soon his hobby was turned into his profession with an emphasis for good clocks. The predominant factor when choosing his purchases was quality. In a time span of over thirty years, Marcel Toebosch has secured himself an international reputation as a collector and an art dealer, established in the renowned Spiegelkwartier in Amsterdam. Marcel Toebosch is now moving to another part of Holland, because, as he says, “the time has come to spend more time with my family.”

Highlights amongst the clocks are a rare French Louis XVI carved gilt wood cartel clock with oscillating movement, signed A. Simonet (€ 45.000 – 55.000), a good Empire mahogany longcase regulator signed Lacheré à Paris 30.000 – 40.000, a unique French quarter striking and musical picture wall clock, signed Hoffmann frères à Paris from circa 1849 (€ 50.000 – 70.000) and a very rare French Louis XIV boulle inlaid month-going ‘religieuse’ with calendar, signed Margotin à Paris (€ 30.000 – 50.000).
Good decorations offer such attractive items as a monumental Venetian Murano glass twenty-light chandelier from circa 1920 (€ 30.000 - 50.000, a pair of gilt-bronze Athéniennes from circa 1800-1810 (€ 30.000 - 50.000) and a pair of Empire gilt- and patinated bronze four-light candelabra with winged female figures, attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (€ 30.000 - 50.000).
Furniture includes a fine Louis XV/Louis XVI style gilt-bronze mounted rosewood and tulipwood parquetry commode, is stamped Migeon and stamped for the Royal Palace of Louis XV/Louis XVI with a double mirrored L beneath a crown circa 1840 (€ 18.000 - 20.000), a Régence gilt-bronze mounted parquetry commode, stamped Rochette, circa 1735 (€ 14.000 - 15.000) and a Louis XV/Louis XVI mahogany bureau cabinet from the end of the 18th century (€ 15.000 - 20.000).
