Ewbank's to offer unique 3.2m square Game of Thrones piece commissioned by HBO to promote TV series

WOKING.- It’s 3.2m square and took more than 30,000 hours to stitch together. Now this unique embroidery created to publicise the launch of Game of Thrones’ fifth season DVD is up for auction at Ewbank’s in Surrey.

Titled the Hardhome Embroidery, the scene chosen by HBO depicts the battle between the White Walker army and the people of the Wildling town of Hardhome. The Night King, with his eyes illuminated by LED lights, is the central figure.

Michele Carragher, the principal embroiderer for Game of Thrones costumes, created the four insects: a moth and three dragonflies. The border includes the crests of the houses of Stark, Arryn, Targaryen, Martell, Tully, Baratheon, Greyjoy, Tyrell and Lannister – all familiar motifs to fans of the show.

Dating to 2016, the huge piece of memorabilia is unique and was created by more than 140 people, using traditional and cutting edge needlework techniques, including appliqué, beading, digital printing, machine embroidery, metal thread work, quilting, as well as surface stitching.

“Talk about wall power for serious collectors, this is an extraordinary work of art and one of the best statement pieces I have seen in the entertainment sector,” says Alastair McCrea, head of Ewbank’s Entertainment & memorabilia department, which topped £1.25 million in sales in 2019.

“Game of Thrones has become arguably the most iconic TV series of recent times and the Night King one of the most memorable characters, so it is no coincidence that HBO chose this scene to be celebrated in promoting the phenomenon.

“Beyond that, the way it was made and the creative vision behind it make it unlike any other piece of entertainment memorabilia on the market. A real one-off.”

Ewbank’s will offer the piece in their Entertainment, Memorabilia & Movie Props Auction, which will be held behind closed doors at Ewbank’s in Surrey on May 21, where the estimate will be £2,500-3,500.
