LANCASTER, PA.- The Gallery at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design presents a solo exhibition by Ana Vizcarra Rankin, a mixed media artist and painter of cartography. Butterfly Effect will be on display February 7, 2020 through April 12, 2020. An Artist Talk will be held on Friday, February 7 at 12:00 p.m. and an Artist Reception will take place during Lancaster’s First Friday event from 5:00-8:00 p.m. that evening.

Rankin’s work formally explores scientific research topics, philosophical thought, and migrating movements. Using both micro and macro perspectives of the world and space, the artist creates maps that investigate reframing binary imaginations and theories of chaos. Incorporating a variety of methods for plotting and communicating spatial information, the exhibit includes Rankins’ constellation and world maps, global flight trackers, and studies of subatomic particles. Using images captured with powerful telescopes and other mediating technologies such as global positioning systems, Rankin creates art that explores the phenomenological sense of being in—and of—the universe.

Rankin was born in Maldonado, Uruguay, and pays homage to the great avant-garde artist of her birthplace, JoaquÍn Torres-García. Included in the exhibit is El Sur, part of her series Large World Maps which positions the Southern Hemisphere at the top of the picture plane, symbolic of defining South America in its own terms rather than in relation to North America. Rankin emphasizes the dualities found in the inverted maps and the reorienting of our realities through these visuals.

A graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Temple University, Rankin lives and works in Philadelphia. She has exhibited extensively including at PhilaMOCA, PA; Rowan University Art Gallery, NJ; The Gallery at Instituto Cervantes, IL; and Bickett Gallery, NC. Rankin’s work is held in numerous private and public collections, including Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Brandywine River Museum of Art, Uruguay Cultural Foundation for the Arts, Peoria Riverfront Museum, Brooklyn Art Library, and Print Council of Australia.

The Gallery at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design uses art-based learning to enable critical thinking and encourage dialogue with global perspectives for both the PCA&D and broader Lancaster communities. Located on Lancaster’s Gallery Row at 204 North Prince Street, the Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.; and Sunday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design was founded in 1982. PCA&D is a private, non-profit, professional art college offering BFA degrees, certificates, credentials, and curricula that enable students of all ages to pursue art as their life’s work.
