LOS ANGELES, CA.- Bonhams will launch its inaugural sale of Post-War & Contemporary Art in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 15. The sale is timed to coincide with Frieze Los Angeles and is highlighted by one of the largest collections of full-sized Supreme skateboard decks, as well as important works by Jonas Wood, Alex Israel, Richard Prince, Billy Al Bengston, Viola Frey, Andreas Gursky, Richard Hambleton, and George Segal.
The free and public exhibition opens February 8.
Muys Snijders, Head of Post War & Contemporary, Americas, comments: We are excited to present this compelling new sale of Post War & Contemporary Art in Los Angeles at a time when the city plays host to international contemporary art collectors visiting the Frieze Art Fair. This auction offers a dynamic selection of cutting-edge Contemporary Art, along with established Post-War artists and the West Coast masters that Bonhams has long championed.
Included in the sale is one of the largest collections of the highly sought-after full-sized Supreme skateboard decks, produced by the streetwear brand between 2008-2019. The 152 skate decks, which will be sold as a single lot, feature works by renowned contemporary artists such as KAWS, John Baldessari, Cindy Sherman, Raymond Pettibon, Mike Kelley, Nan Goldin and many more. It has an estimate of $120,000-180,000. Supreme, founded over twenty-five years ago by James Jebbia, began as a boutique skateboard and clothing shop in downtown NYC, but quickly developed into a global brand. After producing its own trademark line of skateboards in 1998, Supreme became well-known for its collaboration with famous artists using its decks as the canvas. The decks have quickly become collectors items, not just for skateboarders or fans of the streetwear brand, but for art collectors for whom the limited-edition pieces represent fascinating alternative works by major artists.
Laura Bjorstad, Head of Sale, adds: With estimates ranging from $3,000 to $350,000, the sale brings together paintings, works on paper, photographs and sculpture by big names and emerging talent. This truly exciting inaugural auction caters to both new and seasoned collectors alike, offering an opportunity to acquire works by celebrated blue chip artists and todays most captivating young creators at accessible price points.
