Air/mass: an Installation by Anne Lindberg Opens

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.- Air/mass: an Installation by Anne Lindberg offers Sheldon visitors a chance to reveal linear forms that suggest drawing in space. The elements of the installation will be suspended from the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery’s walls and ceilings. This creates a three-dimensional experience that offers allusions to landscapes, flocks of birds, and biomasses.

A flock of migrating birds was the inspiration for air/mass, an installation created specifically for the Sheldon. The project also references Lindberg’s drawings and installations that evoke the movement of prairie grasses or cloud forms, for which she received recognition. While the concept of air/mass relates to Nebraska’s bird flyway corridors, Lindbergs’ work reflects the engagement of contemporary artists with the immersing of viewers in environments that are conceived for a particular gallery or other space. In many ways, the installation is related to poetry or music in its suggestiveness and duration asking to be experienced over time; air/mass will engage multiple senses. As Lindberg relates conceptually, the linear and point constellation will be mute, a silent mesh of atmospheric density that fills the exhibition space with floating forms, changing density and a sense of lifting. The filigree quality of this matrix of fluid lines and weighted points will become an abstract language, a hovering cloud.

Lindberg, a Kansas City native, graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Miami University and a Master of Fine arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She taught at the Kansas City Art Institute from 1993 through 1998. Her work has been featured in numerous one-person and group exhibitions, including ‘Awakenings’ at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art and ‘Drawing the Thread’ in San Antonio.

General support for programs and exhibitions at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden is provided in part by the Nebraska Art Association, the dedicated membership organization for the Sheldon. A Basic Support Grant from the Nebraska Arts Council, a state agency, supports the Nebraska Art Association programs. The Sheldon is fully accredited by the American Association of Museums. Designed by Philip Johnson, the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, which houses a permanent collection of more than 12,000 objects, focusing on American art.
