NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS.- The Smith College Museum of Art presents Politics and Protest in Prints and Photographs through December 31, 2004. As a self-proclaimed "democratic art form" (due to the fact that it creates easily transportable multiple images) printmaking has long been used as a vehicle for disseminating political ideas. Similarly, technological developments in photography, as well as the rise of documentary styles of image-making and mass media have made photography a potent vehicle for social change. Drawing on the collection, this exhibition will examine prints and photographs from a variety of countries and time periods, all of which seek to display or sway people's political ideals.
