MIAMI, FLORIDA.- The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum in conjunction with The Art & Art History Department at Florida International University will present a lecture by artist George Sánchez-Calderón on Tuesday November 23rd as part of the museum’s Latin American & Caribbean Lecture Series hosted by Citibank. Calderón will give a behind the scenes look at the planning, coordination and community involvement required for his large scale public installations.
Miami artist, George Sánchez-Calderón is best known for his large scale public art installations which have been exhibited throughout the Miami area and have attracted a wide audience from the local community to the international art world. Sánchez-Calderón received his BFA from Florida International University and his MFA with an Art History Fellowship from the Rhode Island School of Design. Awards include the Cintas Fellowship in 2003 and the 2004 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists. One of his major installations was the 1999 “Museo de los Balseros” which involved the re-contextualization of Cuban rafts and other artifacts found at sea and displayed in the Franklin Furnace Archive in New York. Created in Miami and occurring simultaneously with Art Basel 2003, Miami Midtown Midway focused on matters dear to the local community and celebrated our burgeoning artistic community and the unique qualities of the characters and personalities in Miami. George Sánchez-Calderón is committed to bringing art to the people and draws worldwide attention to Miami through his art.
