LONDON, ENGLAND.- Mark Jones, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, announced redevelopment plans. He said the museum has raised more than £30m for the redevelopment. The plans include opening galleries dedicated to jewelry, architecture, sculpture and Islamic art, among others, over five years. The ground floor will be redesigned next year.
Mark Jones stated, "I hope that the public will welcome these changes which will make the V&A an ever more attractive and rewarding place to visit. The British Galleries showed everyone how beautiful and inspiring the V&A's collections can be. Our contemporary gallery, opened in 2002, has also been a great success with a series of innovative exhibitions including the current Black British Style. Our exhibition Art Nouveau was seen by more than one million people worldwide and Art Deco will also reach this figure."
A permanent architecture gallery will be opened in November. Later galleries specialized in sculpture, metalware, contemporary glass, miniatures and stained glass will open. There will also be new cafes, restaurants and shops. The £4.25m Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art will open in 2006. The Education Centre will open in the Henry Cole wing in 2007.
