CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Mint Museum of Art presents Andrew Wyeth: The Helga Pictures through Sunday, January 9, 2005. Andrew Wyeth: The Helga Pictures presents 70 works by world-renowned artist Andrew Wyeth. The exhibition includes paintings in tempera, drybrush and watercolors, as well as pencil sketches. Andrew Wyeth, the youngest son of N.C. Wyeth, has become one of the most influential and well-known painters in the history of American art. His images in egg tempera and watercolor are often thought to be exact representations of scenes or people. In fact, however, Wyeth restructures elements of visual reality—arranging people and objects as he pleases in order to create his private visions of places and people. From 1971 to 1985, Wyeth undertook a long and intensive study of one model—Helga Testorf, one of his neighbors in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He created approximately 240 works that featured Helga. In many ways this volume of work is characteristic of his approach towards a subject of special interest—repeated, investigatory, and diverse. The way the series was formed was perhaps less typical. Wyeth created it in nearly complete privacy without revealing to anyone—even his own wife—the existence of the series, the identity of the model, or the extent of the project.
