LONDON.- Two screenprints by Andy Warhol were the top lots at
Bonhams Prints and Multiples sale in London today (Tuesday 18 December). Marilyn screenprint in colours, 1967, sold for an impressive 52,500 while Mao screenprint in colours, 1972, achieved 46,250. Both had an estimate of 20,000-30,000. The 167-lot sale made a total of 1,179,38.
Lucia Tro Santafe, head of Bonhams Prints and Multiples, said ‘We are thrilled with the result of today’s auction which comes at the end of a strong year. The impressive results achieved by the top lots show that demand remains high for modern masters such as Warhol, Bacon and Mir’
Los Proverbios (The Proverbs) by Francisco Jos de Goya y Lucientes also performed well in the sale. The complete set of 18 etchings, before 1824, sold for 35,000.
Other highlights included:
• tude pour une corrida, 1971, lithograph in colours by Francis Bacon sold for 35,000
• Mick Jagger, a screenprint in colours, 1975, achieved 35,000 and The Nun, 1983, by Andy Warhol sold for 31,250
• Gaudi XVII by Joan Mir, etching and aquatint in colours, 1979, sold for 21,250
