NEW YORK, NY.- Doyle's inaugural sale in the new category of Fine Modern Art will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 10am. The sale offers works by a wide range of American, European, Asian and Latin American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Showcasing paintings, drawings, sculpture and fine prints with moderate estimates, this new sale category is certain to generate excitement among seasoned collectors and new buyers alike.
This auction is a well-rounded view of the modernist era from early American modernists like Abraham Walkowitz, to Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann, and Cobra artist Karel Appel. Also contributions from Carribean artists Angel Botello and Jose Bedia and Malaysian artist Ibrahim Hussein.
Featured in the auction is a sizeable selection of property from a Private New Jersey Collection. This collection is primarily, though not exclusively, focused on American abstract art of the 1930s and 1940s. Influential during that period of art were the American Abstract Artists group, here represented in part by works of Carl Holty, Werner Drewes, Ilya Bolotowsky, Esphyr Slobodkina and Gertrude and Balcomb Greene. The American Abstract Artists group, also known as the AAA, formed in 1936, was a collective created with hopes of bringing public awareness to the presence of modernist art movements taking place in America, as the museums and galleries were largely overlooking these contributions. Beginning in the studio of modernist sculptor Ibram Lassaw, the AAA commanded attention and helped to set the foundation for future movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, and Indian Space painting.
Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1877) is most often associated with the American Surrealist movement, which was not as formal as the European movement led by Andre Breton and his Surrealist Manifesto. Abercrombie was primarily self-taught, and had few affiliations guiding her aesthetic choices, but her admiration for the works of such greats as Rene Magritte is apparent in her own paintings such as Man with Gloves on a Road (est. $2,000-4,000).
Other artists featured in the sale include Robert Dash, Leon Golub, George Grosz, Richard Hunt, Wolf Kahn, Blanche Lazzell, Joan Miró, Louise Nevelson, Larry Rivers, Rolph Scarlett and Claude Venard.
