NEW YORK, NY.- SHIN Gallery announced they now represent Loredana Sperini. Loredana Sperini (b. 1970) is a contemporary artist who grew up in the Toggenburg region of Switzerland and now lives and works in Zurich. She made a name for herself with small-scale portraits of friends in which she brought the process of artistic appropriation into the medium of embroidery. Her first embroidered pictorial works were made by hands, with a needle and black thread, in meticulous craftsmanship and meditative concentration. These time - consuming embroideries were based on pencil drawings of portrait photographs. Her engagement with textile materials was followed by wall-sized encaustic paintings and large-scale works with mirrors. Schematic creatures gazed out with grotesque faces, while viewers saw themselves reflected in a fragmented, distorted mirror. To overcome the two-dimensionality of the surface, Sperini experimented with wax. She is interested in the process of melting and casting and the immediacy of the material as well as the combination and application of polymorphic plasticity with and to rough materials.
In the mid-1960s, a generation of artists began to react to the reduced, strict structures of Minimalism with what was called anti-form or eccentric abstraction. Sperini seeks out and arrives at very personal, poetic, physical objects that relate to the body. This concepts of the body become scenarios of alienation, fragmentation reshaping, and transformation. Sperini's working process is experimental and technically sophisticated in their implementation, and the results are surprising for their special, aesthetic appeal. Her imagery, which oscillates between abstraction and figuration and occasionally calls to mind grotesques, touches on essential themes of art such as physicality and transience and thus opens up a supporting conceptual level.
She had a number of shows including at Frieze New York in 2015, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen in 2016, Hauser & Wirth Collection with their 2015 show "Diamonds Always Come in Small Packages." Sperini received the Art Prize endowed by the Ortsbugergemeinde St. Gallen on 2015 exhibition Heimspiel with series of waxed concrete paintings. Her works are collected in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
