NEW YORK, NY.- The Art Dealers Association of America today announced that its Board of Directors has confirmed five new member galleries: Honor Fraser Gallery (Los Angeles), Kayne Griffin Corcoran (Los Angeles), Jessica Silverman Gallery (San Francisco), Franklin Parrasch Gallery (New York), and Venus Over Manhattan (New York). They join the nation’s leading nonprofit organization of fine art dealers, which comprises over 180 members from 29 cities in the U.S. and is a leader in establishing best practices for the field and advancing scholarship and connoisseurship.
“We are proud to welcome these five outstanding galleries as new members of the ADAA,” said Andrew L. Schoelkopf, President of the ADAA. “It is especially exciting to expand the Association’s representation on the West Coast and add to the range of dynamic programming, expertise, and connoisseurship of our membership across the country.”
To ensure that new members share the ADAA’s commitment to integrity and professionalism, new candidates are nominated by existing ADAA members, and must have been in business for at least five years. They also demonstrate a record of accomplishment and substantial contributions to the art community, by offering works of high aesthetic quality, presenting major exhibitions, producing scholarly publications, and actively working with museums. Through a year-long application process, which includes candidate interviews by a selection committee composed of ADAA member dealers, the committee determines eligibility and votes on nominees, with final approval by the Board of Directors and the entire membership.
The five new ADAA member galleries have established expertise across artistic periods, genres, and media and have made significant contributions to the art market and cultural community, locally, nationally, and internationally:
Honor Fraser Gallery opened in Los Angeles in 2006 with a commitment to provide a platform for a diverse and influential community of artists. The gallery represents emerging and established artists who work across mediums using process-driven, research-based, and object-focused strategies. Creating artworks that are aesthetically surprising and intellectually rigorous, the artists represented – including Glenn Kaino, KAWS, Annie Lapin, and Sarah Cain – mount exhibitions that challenge artistic and social conventions. Founder Honor Fraser said, “It is an honor to be considered amongst this distinguished list of dealers, and I look forward to working with my West Coast colleagues to consolidate the ADAA’s presence here in Los Angeles.”
Informed by three generations of art and market knowledge, Kayne Griffin Corcoran was founded in Los Angeles in 2011 under the creative leadership of Maggie Kayne and the primary and secondary market expertise of Bill Griffin and James Corcoran. The gallery embraces characteristics unique to Los Angeles in both its program and physical space, representing artists such as James Turrell, Mary Corse, and David Lynch. The gallery also has a strong historical foundation, which acts as the backbone for all curatorial programming decisions, including representing artists pivotal to major movements of their time, such as Jiro Takamatsu, Mary Obering, and Beverly Pepper. “My partners and I are honored to join the esteemed organization of the ADAA. We have long admired the scholarly and important platform it provides for galleries, artists, and institutions. Jessica Silverman Gallery was founded in San Francisco in 2008 and is known for its strong, diverse roster of international artists, which includes Judy Chicago, Isaac Julien, Dashiell Manley, and Nicole Wermers. Founder Jessica Silverman said, “Jessica Silverman Gallery is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer, so the timing of this recognition by the ADAA is perfect. We are delighted to be a member of a group of dealers who believe in the importance of ethics and aspire to museum quality art.”
Founded in 1986, Franklin Parrasch Gallery is known for exhibiting Los Angeles artists whose careers emerged in the 1960s and whose aesthetic alignment with Minimalism developed independently from that of their East Coast contemporaries. The gallery consistently organizes shows that consider diverse evolutionary theories, presenting a wide range of artists who employ innovative practices, such as Peter Alexander, Joan Snyder, Daniel Turner, and Mark Gonzales. President Franklin Parrasch said, "I’m looking forward to the gallery’s active role and future as an ADAA member. New York City’s Venus Over Manhattan was founded in 2012 by Adam Lindemann and is dedicated to curated exhibitions, both historic and contemporary, which cast a unique and often iconoclastic view on the work of established artists or artists whose works have been somewhat overlooked, including Bernard Buffet, Billy Al Bengston, William Copley, Walter Dahn, John Dogg, Jack Goldstein, MARYAN, David Medalla, Peter Saul, and H.C. Westermann. The gallery also presents exhibitions by a roster of established artists including Katherine Bernhardt, Alexander Calder, Maurizio Cattelan, Mike Kelley, John McCracken, Cady Noland, Raymond Pettibon, Andy Warhol, and Franz West. Founder and Owner Adam Lindemann said, "We look forward to continuing the ADAA’s long tradition of working with clients, scholars, and museums to promote and enhance the artists and stories that make up the Venus Over Manhattan program."
