NEW YORK, NY.- Christies announces the winter contemporary sales encompassing a standout selection of works with a wide range of styles and price points offered in two live auctions, Contemporary Edition on February 28, and Post-War & Contemporary Art on March 1, and two online sales, On Paper and Contemporary Portfolio, both of which will run from February 23 to March 2. All lots will be on view to the public at 20 Rockefeller Plaza from February 24 to March 2.
Contemporary Edition | 28 February
Christies will present Contemporary Edition, a biannual sale featuring 185 striking Post-war and Contemporary prints and multiples. Contemporary fixtures such as John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha and Keith Haring stand alongside Post-War icons including Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Frank Stella. The sale is anchored by diverse selection of editions from The Melva Bucksbaum Collection, and features other important private collections such as the Collection of Senator Jacob K. Javits and Marian B. Javits, The Estate of William Kelly Simpson, and The Collection of Paul F. Walter.
Post-War & Contemporary Art | 1 March
The March auction of Post-War and Contemporary Art encompasses 393 works and is expected to exceed $18 million, making it the most valuable mid-season sale offered at Christies New York. Highlights include examples from Andreas Gursky, David Hockney, Alice Neel, Carrie Mae Weems and Sam Francis, whose canvas, Blue, Yellow and Green, will lead the sale with an estimate of $700,000-1,000,000.
Underlining the Post-War and Contemporary sale is a selection of 146 lots from The Melva Bucksbaum Collection. Across many years, Bucksbaum became one of the art worlds most beloved figures, and a staunch supporter of artists and their work. As a collector, The New York Times reported, she blended a private passion for art with an invigorating public altruism. Works from her extensive collection were offered beginning this past November in Christies Major New York sales of Post-War and Contemporary Art. The initial group was met with tremendous enthusiasm, selling 100% by lot. The same level of excitement is to be anticipated for the present selection, which is just as effective in illustrating her impeccable eye for the work of up and coming artists. Highlights span from George Condos Mental Landscape ($150,000-200,000) to Nina Chanel Abneys Country Ken ($5,000-7,000). This will mark Abneys first appearance at auction.
On paper | 23 February 2 March | Online
The online only sale of On Paper comprises an outstanding selection of works on paper by todays most important Post-War and Contemporary artists. This auction features more than 100 works at enticing estimates across the realm of paper media, including drawings, photographs, paintings on paper and collage. Highlights include works by Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Wolfgang Tillmans and Kara Walker, as well as important works on paper from the collection Martina Yamin.
Contemporary Portfolio | 23 February 2 March | Online
Christies will present Contemporary Portfolio, a selection of contemporary artist books and portfolios from the Collection of Melva Bucksbaum. Indicative of the broad scope and creative possibilities of the artist book format, this online auction offers a variety of lots to inspire collectors at any stage. The sale features many well-known names in contemporary art and photography including Anish Kapoor, Jeff Koons, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Ed Ruscha.
