BRUSSELS.- Independent announced a special edition of Independent Brussels overseen by guest curator Vincent Honoré. Independent Brussels 2018 will run from April 19 to 22 at the historic Vanderborght building, which has served as the home for the two previous editions of Independent Brussels. This year’s curated presentation will feature commissioned presentations by international galleries, non-profits, and museums, along with an expanded program of performances, talks, and dynamic activations within the 60,000-square-foot space.

Independent Brussels 2018 will be curated by Vincent Honoré, who was recently appointed senior curator at the Hayward Gallery in London. He was previously artistic director at DRAF, London, where he curated solo shows with artists including Oscar Tuazon, Neil Beloufa, and Rosemarie Trockel, while Pierre Huyghe, Laure Prouvost, and Sarah Lucas are among the artists who presented live art. Prior to DRAF, he held curatorial positions at the Palais de Tokyo and Tate Modern. Honoré is also currently curating the 13th Baltic Triennial, which will run from May 11 to November 18, 2018.

“Vincent brings a strong vision and track record of exhibitions that go beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar format,” said Elizabeth Dee, founder of Independent. “We’re looking forward to delivering a truly unique context for future art experiences.”

As guest curator, Honoré will oversee the invitational method of selection that has been a tradition of Independent, choosing which international galleries, artists, and institutions to invite. Through a collaborative method between Honoré and participating galleries, the 2018 program will activate the entire Vanderborght building. Given Honoré’s strong background in performance, there will be an additional focus on durational art formats.

Honoré will work closely with Independent Brussels founder Laura Mitterrand and Brussels-based Projects Director Goedele Bartholomeeusen. Matthew Higgs, Director of White Columns/New York, will continue his role as Founding Curatorial Advisor to Independent New York, which runs from March 8–11, 2018.
