Installation view, Collection in Focus | Modern European Currents, July 15, 2025– March 6, 2026, Solomon. Guggenheim Museum, New York. Photo: David Heald © Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York.

NEW YORK, NY.- Experimentation and heightened creativity characterized the European avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century, as artists pursued multifaceted stylistic innovations. Modern European Currents examines this dynamic period through nearly twenty paintings and watercolors from the Guggenheim’s holdings by influential figures from the Austro-Hungarian, German, and Russian Empires—including Natalia Goncharova, Vasily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Liubov Popova, and Egon Schiele. The exhibition invites audiences to engage with celebrated collection highlights, such as Franz Marc’s Yellow Cow (1911), as well as hidden gems, among them Heinrich Campendonk’s Farmer with Horse and Wagon (1918), which has not been shown since entering the collection in 1948. This Collection in Focus presentation illuminates a seismic moment of transnational interchange and transformation, when artists tested new possibilities for visual representation. ... More

Edward Burtynsky, Pengah Wall #2, Komodo National Park, Indonesia, 2017. Archival Pigment Print, 121.9 x 218.4 cm. 48 x 86 in. Edition of 6.

LONDON.- This month the Lower Gallery at the Cork Street space features a selection of works exploring landscape and environment, with highlights from Dutch artist Scarlett Hooft Graafland and Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky, both of whom also have major public exhibitions on view this summer. Scarlett Hooft Graafland (b. 1973) is known for her surreal, dream-like photographs that serve as lasting records of her meticulously choreographed, site-specific sculptural interventions and performances in some of the most remote parts of the world, from the salt desert of Bolivia to the desolate Canadian Arctic, the island of Madagascar, and the distant shores of Vanuatu, where her work captures an ongoing exchange between the vastness of nature and the boundaries of culture. Scarlett Hooft Graafland shot Sky Lines on a beach in Madagascar, which was historically a location for the slave trade, alluding to the term "blue people", enslaved Mozambicans and their descendants, who were reclassified ... SANTA FE, NM.- Collectors figuratively saddled up and traveled the historic Santa Fe Trail to Morphy’s June 21 auction of elite Western art and antiques, a million-dollar-plus event that embodied the spirit of American adventure and reverence for Native culture in 472 diverse and exceptional lots. The evening sale was a well-attended special highlight of the Old West Show & Auction weekend held annually at the Santa Fe Community Center. The high-end auction lineup included fine and decorative art, riding apparel and tack; firearms, silverwork, Native tribal art and relics; and Hollywood cowboy memorabilia, to name but a few of the categories. Top-lot honors went to an artist-signed oil-on-canvas painting by William Gilbert Gaul (NAD, 1855-1919) titled Indian by Campfire. Gaul was a well-credentialed artist known for his military scenes and Western subjects, including realistic depictions of interaction between Native and Caucasian people. Born in New Jersey, Gaul ... NEW BRITAIN, CONN.- The New Britain Museum of American Art announced the acquisition of Harriet Cany Peale’s Kaaterskill Clove, 1858, made possible through a generous multiyear grant from the Robert C. Vance Foundation. “Harriet Cany Peale’s Kaaterskill Clove is an extraordinary picture and we are thrilled it has found a home here at the NBMAA. Not only is it skillfully rendered, but the detail is such that some features of the landscape are still identifiable in photos of the site today,” says Stephanie Mayer Heydt, Director of Collections and Exhibitions. “The acquisition is also a landmark purchase for the Museum—as our first major landscape painting by a woman artist, Kaaterskill Clove offers a powerful complement to our existing strength in American landscape painting. It speaks directly to our mission to expand and diversify the collection in meaningful ways.” Born in Philadelphia, Harriet Cany Peale began creating art before studying under Rembrandt Peale (1778-18 ... Spring Dance, 1996

NEW YORK, NY.- Sapar Contemporary is presenting the gallery's first solo show of Japanese- American artist Mizue Sawano (b. 1941, Japan). Included in the exhibition are her signature works that showcase her engagement with the figure that began in the 1950s in Paris and her life-long dialogue with nature. In describing Sawano’s Water Lilies series, curator and Asia scholar Alexandra Munroe states, “Multilayered in form, structure, and color, Sawano’s Water Lilies simulate the optical dynamism of nature’s temporal phenomena, capturing the sensual immediacy of time and site, of the very substance of light, water, and blooms.” The series of Sakura or Cherry Blossom paintings, which depict a cherished subject of Japanese painting and poetry, began in the 1980s. Munroe, who believes the Cherry Blossom series to be undoubtedly the most important works of her career describes Sawano's approach: What is challenging is that she perceives sakura as a metaphor ... NEW YORK, NY.- Efraín López is presenting Un día, a solo exhibition of recent works by Puerto Rican-born artist Ricardo Cabret. For his first exhibition with the gallery, the artist presents a suite of intimately-scaled paintings alongside a two-channel video installation. Un Dia is on view from July 15 through August 22, 2025. Drawing on his dual background as both artist and computer engineer, Ricardo Cabret operates between painting, data, and code. In Un día, Cabret continues his investigation into the invisible infrastructures that shape contemporary life—data networks, algorithmic pathways, and the architectures of computation—rendering these abstract systems into visual and material forms. For Cabret, software functions not only as a means of expression but as a structural tool. His scripts generate abstracted forms that act as the foundations for his compositions. These lines and structures become reimagined as paintings, embedded with hidden messages, obscured diagrams, and layers ... More

ATHENS.- Gagosian announces A Telegram to my dear Suki, an exhibition of drawings, paintings, and a video work by Oscar Murillo, on view at the gallery in Athens. A Telegram to my dear Suki builds on a sequence of recent exhibitions by Murillo including The flooded garden at Tate Modern, London (2024), and Espíritus en el Pantano, which is on view at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Mexico, until August 10, 2025. These projects transformed their institutional venues into sites of collective expression by inviting visitors to inscribe and layer their own gestures onto canvas installed throughout each space. Through this act of participation, the museum becomes a social arena, visibly underscoring the possibilities and challenges of collectivity, communion, and shared culture. In A Telegram to my dear Suki, Murillo meditates on the potential and fragility of communicative mark making. A single gesture on a surface activates it, charging it with energy that may be echoed, erased, or expan ... More

Derek Eller Gallery presents Steve Keister's sculptural homage to ancient deities
NEW YORK, NY.- Derek Eller Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition of mixed-media sculpture and wall-based works by Steve Keister entitled Split Level. Informed by Mesoamerican architecture and sculpture, Keister conjures bespoke deities that pay homage to Pre-Colombian myth. At the core of his ethos is a profound interest in human and animal consciousness; Keister extrapolates his subjects from Central American mythology to develop a complex ecosystem of mystical fauna. Keister’s practice employs a diverse range of material including wood, ceramic, Styrofoam, and cardboard, most of which is scavenged and repurposed. This action was instigated by his discovery of a formal correlation between Styrofoam and cardboard packing cartons and Mesoamerican architecture and sculpture. To signify this relationship, he developed a process of casting ceramic slip in plaster molds. The plaster molds ... More
