ROME.- The life of Jews in 17th-century Florence was quite constrained. They were confined to a ghetto, a cramped area about the size of a football field that housed about 200 families. They could work only in certain professions, like rag-picking, and were not allowed to join professional guilds or corporations, which would have opened the door to fields like architecture. Their interactions with Christians were strictly regulated. This is why scholars are puzzling over the life of Jewish painter Jona Ostiglio, a card-carrying member of a prestigious academy founded by the famed artist Giorgio Vasari. A painter at the Medici court, Ostiglio’s existence was practically unknown until now. “It’s quite a discovery,” Eike Schmidt, the director of the Uffizi Gallery, said Wednesday before a lecture seeking to extract Ostiglio and his work from historical oblivion. NEW YORK, NY.- A classic grid painting by Piet Mondrian sold during a Sotheby’s auction Monday for $51 million, including fees, which topped the previous $50.6 million benchmark for the Dutch artist that was set in 2015. The record price was prearranged by the auction house with an unnamed Asian buyer through a third-party guarantee — a way of reducing the auction house’s risk of selling below estimate. The auctioneer tried and failed to attract buyers above $51 million so the guarantor won the lot, with a discount on the buyer’s fees, according to a source close to the sale who was not authorized to speak publicly. CINCINNATI, OH.- An artwork that was part of the Qing dynasty’s (1644–1911) imperial collection in China will take a rare trip from its current home in Japan to the Cincinnati Art Museum. The Noble Horse, a handscroll work painted by the government official and painter Gong Kai (1222–1307) during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368), will be featured during the second half of the museum’s Galloping Through Dynasties exhibition. Visitors can see it from Nov. 18, 2022–Jan. 1, 2023. The exhibition is free. Due to its age and significance, the Noble Horse does not make frequent appearances outside of the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, where it’s a part of the permanent collection. Encompassing pieces from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD, it includes a Roman pale green glass drinking horn from the Western Empire, circa late 3rd - mid-4th Century A.D. estimated at £25,000-35,000. Rhytons or drinking horns were made with either an open or closed tip. When made with an open tip, the drinker held the rhyton in his raised hand and poured the liquid into his mouth.
