ORLANDO, FLA.- The Orlando Museum of Art no longer resembles the active crime scene it was in June, when agents from the FBI’s Art Crime Team raided the museum and seized its marquee exhibition: 25 paintings attributed to Jean-Michel Basquiat but whose authenticity was questioned in an FBI affidavit that detailed a nine-year criminal investigation into the artworks. A television news helicopter no longer buzzes overhead while broadcasters in the sun-baked parking lot muse about the fate of the paintings and their owners, who marketed them to prospective buyers as having an appraised value of $100 million. Now the museum is hoping to get beyond its role at the center of a headline-grabbing art scandal and is trying to reassure the public, the art world, local officials, donors and its own staff that it still has a culturally vital role to play in serving the community. NEW YORK, NY.- A beautifully preserved grouping of three life-size terra-cotta figures dating to 300 B.C. that was seized from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles by the Manhattan district attorney’s office in New York will be sent back to Italy after the museum agreed that it had been illegally excavated, museum and law enforcement officials said. The three objects were confiscated in April as part of an investigation into an accused Italian antiquities smuggler, Gianfranco Becchina, 83, who has been convicted of receiving stolen antiquities by Greece, officials said. HONG KONG.-White Cube Hong Kong is presenting ‘Sofabilder / Sofa Pictures’, an exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by German artist Georg Baselitz that give new and haunting form to his lifelong quest to unite abstraction and figuration in an inextricable dance. A nude female form based loosely on Baselitz’s wife Elke, whom he’s depicted throughout his career and now conjures from memory, is a central motif in each work. Pablo Picasso’s 1942 painting L’Aubade (The Serenade) is among the inspirations for Baselitz’s images. ASPEN.- Boaz Vaadia is the internationally known sculptor whose timeless, evocative stone figures now inhabit museums, cultural sites, art galleries, and private collections. As major installations at prime buildings, parks, and homes around the world, they set a tone of peace and serenity. Born and raised in Israel, Vaadia moved to New York City in 1975 thanks to a grant he received from the American-Israel Cultural Foundation. Vaadia established his studio in SoHo just before its streets labored to give birth to a new community of working artists. Roads were torn up and buildings were torn down. In the chaos of New York City, he discovered supplies from the earth. Slate and bluestone, ubiquitous materials of the city, are sedimentary rocks from glacial periods, millions of years old. Alda Merini didn’t like these labels, but as one of Italy’s most celebrated literary figures, she couldn’t escape them. Countless admirers have been intrigued by her life, from her upbringing along the system of canals in Milan called the Navigli, to her struggles with mental illness as an adult. Merini found inspiration everywhere. In verses carrying erotic and sacred imagery, a homeless man became “a fiery icicle laying over my warm secret,” the patients of a mental asylum a “herd of hermits” inside the walls of Jericho. September 14, 1910. Willy Ronis (14 August 1910 - 12 September 2009 was a French photographer. His best-known work shows life in post-war Paris and Provence. In 2005–2006 the Paris city hall held Willy Ronis in Paris, a retrospective exhibition of his work, that had more than 500,000 visitors. There was also an exhibition at Rencontres d'Arles festival, Arles, France, in 2009. Ronis died at age 99, on 12 September 2009.
