CHAPEL HILL, NC.- The Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is announcing two new summer exhibitions: "Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks," and "Houseguests: American Art from the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership,". Both exhibitions close on September 4. Alexis Rockman (American, born 1962) created his dramatic series, "Shipwrecks," depicting historic sea disasters, to explore the impact of transportation and migration — from goods and people to plants and animals — on our planet and its waterways. "Rockman's large-scale oil paintings and watercolors remind us of the shadow of potential disaster that looms over ocean voyages. He places these concerns in a global narrative, but they have a special resonance in North Carolina, where the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” has claimed thousands of ships since record keeping began in the sixteenth century," said Lauren Turner, Associate Curator for Contempor ... SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art announces Diego Rivera’s America, the most in-depth examination of the artist’s work in over two decades. Diego Rivera’s America brings together more than 150 of Rivera’s paintings, frescoes and drawings—as well as three galleries devoted to large-scale film projections of highly influential murals he created in Mexico and the U.S. On view from July 16, 2022–January 2, 2023, the exhibition focuses on his work from the 1920s to the mid-1940s, the richest years of Rivera’s prolific career. During these two key decades, Rivera created a new vision for North America, informed by his travels in Mexico and the United States. “Rivera was one of the most aesthetically, socially and politically ambitious artists of the 20th century,” notes guest curator James Oles. “He was deeply concerned with transforming society and shaping identity—Mexican identit ... X-ray image of Vincent Van Gogh self-portrait, National Galleries of Scotland.

by Nina Siegal

AMSTERDAM.- There were 35 known self-portraits of Vincent van Gogh in the world. That appears to have changed this week. “To that number, we can add now another picture,” Louis van Tilborgh, a senior curator at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, said Thursday. The National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, with the support of the Van Gogh Museum, announced that it had discovered what seemed to be a new van Gogh self-portrait, hidden on the back of another work by the Dutch artist and covered up by cardboard. That 1885 painting, “Head of a Peasant Woman,” was part of a series of portraits that van Gogh painted in Nuenen, the Netherlands, which were probably studies for his famous work “The Potato Eaters.” The National Galleries X-rayed the work in preparation for an upcoming exhibition and noticed that there was another image on the back. ... Lily Safra, star-crossed socialite and philanthropist, dies at 87   Poly Auction Hong Kong Modern and Contemporary Art Auctions realise a combined total of HKD 450 million   Royal Academy of Arts opens 'Milton Avery: American Colourist'

In 2011 Sotheby's offered this Louis XVI Ormolu-Mounted Japanese Lacquer Commode with secretaire en suite, attributed to Adam Weisweiler from the Collection of Lily & Edmond J. Safra. Est. $5/7 million. Photo: Sotheby's.

NEW YORK, NY.- Lily Safra, a Brazilian-born socialite and a philanthropist who led a star-filled, star-crossed life with enough jet-setting ups and tragedy-filled downs to fill a dozen Danielle Steel novels, including the bizarre death of her fourth husband, banker Edmond J. Safra, died July 9 at her home in Geneva. She was 87. A spokesperson for the Edmond J. Safra Foundation, which she directed, said the cause was pancreatic cancer. Lily Safra, who was known to the press — especially the British tabloids — as “the Gilded Lily,” led what at first glance might seem to be a charmed life: As one of the richest women in the world, she owned homes in New York City, London, Paris, Geneva and Monaco; amassed a world-class art collection; and counted Prince Charles and Jacob Rothschild among her close confidants. She used her wealth to great ... More

LONDON.- Milton Avery (1885 – 1965) has long been recognised in the United States as one of the most important and influential twentieth-century American artists. Avery’s compositions, taken from daily life and which include portraits and landscapes, are imbued with a colour sensibility, harmony and balance, which was to have a major influence on the next artistic generation. Avery played a vital role in the development of Abstract Expressionism through his close association with some of the younger exponents of the movement, such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Adolph Gottlieb. His work defies distinct categorisation; stretching between American Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism, both of which had a significant impact on his oeuvre, although ... More

MUNICH.- In 1955, the first documenta took place in Kassel. In 2022, 67 years later, the 15th edition of the exhibition is now being presented. For a long time, the 100-day exhibition was regarded as a reliable status report on the art of its respective present and had a lasting influence on the programs and collections of the art museums of the Federal Republic of Germany. At the same time, it has always been an important motor of institutional critique: What was discussed, collected, and exhibited was, and still is, often initiated by the documenta. This influence is also clearly documented in the exhibition history of the Lenbachhaus. Our last project for example, “Group Dynamics – Collectives of the Modernist Period,” would have been inconceivable without Documenta11, curated by Okwui Enwezor. Today, the history of the documenta and its founding myths are viewed critically. In recent years, especially the continuities fr ... More

AMSTERDAM.- GRIMM announced the representation of Brooklyn-based painter Anthony Cudahy. GRIMM’s representation and work on behalf of the artist will be shaped in close collaboration with Hales Gallery (London, UK and New York, US) and Semiose Galerie (Paris, FR). GRIMM’s first presentation with Cudahy will be a solo exhibition of new paintings opening November 4, 2022 in Amsterdam (NL). Anthony Cudahy weaves imagery culled from photo archives, art history, film stills, hagiographic icons and personal photographs to explore themes of queer identity and tenderness. His evocative figurative paintings and drawings are informed by extensive historical research. They negotiate feelings of loneliness, isolation, desire, and safety through the lens of the artist’s own autobiographical narratives and crafted mythologies. In 1961 Henri Lefebvre wrote in his Critique of the Everyday Life, “Everyday life does not exist ... More

TOKYO.- Blum & Poe is presenting The Family, New York-based artist March Avery’s third solo exhibition with the gallery and her first in Tokyo. The oil paintings and watercolors presented in The Family epitomize the way that March moves through the world—processing intimate moments shared with loved ones through art making, as though it is another of her basic human senses. Spanning more than fifty years of the artist’s career, these portraits capture daily scenes shared with close friends or family—such as her mother Sally, her son Sean, and her granddaughter Delilah. Commemorating these interactions in March’s signature style—a distinctive fusing of abstraction, figurative motifs, and emotive palettes—these works expose the exquisite in the quotidian, celebrating brief interpersonal exchanges in vivid color and ... Masters of Sculpture installation view.

NEW YORK, NY.- Bill Hodges Gallery is presenting its first exhibition devoted entirely to sculpture. This carefully curated exhibition, Masters of Sculpture, draws from the gallery’s more than 40 year collection, to display more than 150 years of Black history, from emancipation to the present day. Many of the artworks in this exhibition have been displayed alongside works of other media, but never in a dedicated celebration of sculpture. Included are masterpieces by French sculptors Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier, along with works by highly important African American masters Melvin Edwards, Richard Hunt, Willie Cole, and a host of others. The gallery still retains its strength of collection in the flat or two-dimensional works, yet the collection of three-dimensional has grown over the years and the gallery feels the time is now to showcase a special exhibition of works that are so often put on the back burn ... Azael Langa’s art perpetuates the idea that inspiration comes from home. His prolific use of fumage as a medium to explore the bittersweet socio-political landscape of South Africa ties into Langa’s thematical interrogation of the interconnectivity of communities. It is this conceptual combination which gives Langa’s work a melancholic yet jubilant impression. He uses overlooked individuals from his community to explore ideas of inequality, social injustices and elitism whilst simultaneously ... More

Rencontres d'Arles: Espace Van Gogh opens "Romain Urhausen: In His Time"
ARLES.- Prolific but little known in France, Luxembourg photographer Romain Urhausen stands out for his singular style extending between the French humanist school and the German subjective school of the 1950s and 1960s, to which he actively contributed. His tinged with humor photographs, often a pretext for formal and poetic exploration, go beyond a classic depiction of reality. The exhibition shows how Urhausen took an experimental approach to daily life, working men, the cityscape, the nude and the self-portrait. The subjective aesthetic he learned from Otto Steinert influenced his formal language, treatment of contrasts, framing and way of seeing the world differently. The show highlights this vision, setting up a dialogue between Urhausen’s photographs and those of his peers by creating new "elective affinities". Keen to make photography ... More

SculptureCenter presents 'In Practice: Literally means collapse'
LONG ISLAND CITY, NY.- In Practice: Literally means collapse is an exhibition of new works and artistic meditations that consider the notion of the ruin expanded to include social traditions as well as physical infrastructure. From built environments and structures of circulation to protocols and belief systems that shape social and political subjects, infrastructures are in constant generative friction with decay. Rituals of maintenance are designed and performed to prevent what is constructed from being physically, or subjectively, ruined. Diagnosing a contemporary obsession with ruins, artist and theorist Svetlana Boym has written, “‘Ruin’ literally means ‘collapse’—but actually, ruins are more about remainders and reminders.”[1] Boym elaborates that as sites, ruins can simultaneously trigger both potential nostalgias and imagined futures. ... Flashback
On a day like today, Italian artist Caravaggio died
September 18, 1610. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (29 September 1571 - 18 July 1610) was an Italian artist active in Rome, Naples, Malta, and Sicily between 1593 and 1610. His paintings, which combine a realistic observation of the human state, both physical and emotional, with a dramatic use of lighting, had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. In this image: A photographer and a cameraman take a picture of Caravaggio's painting "The calling of Saints Peter and Andrew" in Rome, Monday, Nov. 20, 2006. The painting, owned by Queen Elizabeth II, languished for years in a dusty storeroom before being identified as the work of Italian master Caravaggio, on show at the Gate Termini Art Gallery in Rome.
