LONDON.- British painter David Hockney grabbed the art world’s attention in the 1960s and ’70s with fun and glamorous depictions of California life. They included striking images of nude sunbathers lying alongside glistening swimming pools and socialites in their sleek, modernist homes. Then, Hockney discovered technology. In 1982, he began exhibiting works made with Polaroid cameras. Those pieces featured dozens of photos of friends and family, or landscapes, arranged into disjointed collages. Soon, Hockney was making art with fax machines and photocopiers. In the last 10 years, he has exhibited works he made with smartphone apps and his iPad. Now, Hockney, 85, has embraced digital technology on a much larger scale to create “Bigger & Closer (Not Smaller & Further Away)” — an immersive spectacular that opens on Wednesday at Lightroom, a new London arts venue, and runs through June 4. ... GREENWICH, CONN.-The Bruce Museum will open its newly renovated and expanded building on April 2, 2023, following a transformative $67 million building project that more than doubles the size of the Museum. The centerpiece of the New Bruce is the addition of a three-story, 44,000 square-foot new wing that will provide expansive exhibition galleries, a new entrance and lobby, and public amenities including event spaces, an auditorium, and café. Hans Hofmann is traditionally known for creating paintings that navigate the dynamics of color and form, and this exhibition revisits a selection of Hofmann’s works on paper completed during his journey from Europe to America, which were originally showcased at the Legion of Honor and the University of California in 1931. ATLANTA, GA.- This spring, the High Museum of Art presents the first major museum exhibition dedicated to the nature-based works of pioneering American modernist painter Joseph Stella (1877-1946), which features more than 120 paintings and works on paper that reveal the breadth of the artist’s multi-faceted practice. Co-organized by the High and the Brandywine River Museum of Art, “Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature” debuted at the Norton Museum of Art in October 2022 and will be on view at the High from Feb. 24 to May 21, 2023, before traveling to the Brandywine in June 2023. NEW YORK, NY.- Rick Newman, who opened Catch a Rising Star on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in 1972 and built it into a trendy club where Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Freddie Prinze, Jay Leno and countless other comedians did some of their earliest work and sometimes returned to refine material, died Monday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 81. Peter Martin, his partner in the Triad Theater, a Manhattan performance space, for the past 15 years, said the cause was cancer and complications of heart operations. Newman had run a few other businesses, including a singles bar and a steakhouse, before he decided to try a comedy club. “For the first time in my life I’ve got a reason why I was born,” he told United Press International in 1975, when Catch, as it became known, was drawing crowds and making careers. ... PARIS.-Almine Rech has announced “YANG ASING ITU (THAT PECULIAR..),” a solo exhibition by Indonesian artist Roby Dwi Antono on view from 8 March 2023 - 8 April 2023. “YANG ASING ITU (THAT PECULIAR..)” comprises twenty-seven new works on canvas and paper, debuting a new series featuring strange creatures that appear both humanoid and alien (all works 2023). Roby began the series by looking at images of kaiju—monsters that appear in Japanese science fiction movies—from blockbuster Japanese films such as Godzilla and Ultraman. But while these science fiction films depicted monsters attacking large metropolises, Roby used them as a departure point to instead dream up creatures, from memory and imagination, that don’t threaten the viewer. Joyce Theater expands to the East Village NEW YORK, NY.- The Joyce Theater Foundation is planning to expand into the East Village with rehearsal and studio space that can also be used for small performances, the organization announced Wednesday. The Joyce, which since 1982 has presented dance companies from all over the world at its home in Chelsea, has signed a yearlong lease on a multilevel building on East 10th Street that it hopes to purchase and operate permanently. The sale is contingent upon the Joyce being able to raise the $21 million needed to secure funding for the first phase of the renovation. A renovation is projected to cost from $50 million to $55 million and to take about three years to complete.
