TURKU.- WAM Museum of Contemporary Art (WAM) in Turku, Finland opens to the public following an extensive renovation. The museums opening exhibitions include a major solo exhibition by Canadian artist Sabrina Ratté and highlights from the Turku City Art Collection. In addition, the renewed WAMx platform introduces a new space for experimentation and encounters.
WAM opens to the public on October 31, 2026.
Sabrina Rattés solo exhibition Web of Wyrd marks the opening of WAMs new exhibition space
Web of Wyrd, the first solo exhibition in the Nordic countries by Canadian artist Sabrina Ratté (b. 1982), will inaugurate a completely new exhibition space on the museums lower level. Based in Montreal, Ratté is known for her visually rich works that combine 3D animation, analog video, print, and installation. At WAM, she will create a mystical, immersive environment where the boundaries between the exhibition space and the artwork are deliberately blurred.
The exhibition presents eight works created in the 2020s, shown as large-scale projections and printed works. Influenced by science fiction, the works reflect the artists interest in spirituality and animism.
As part of the exhibition, Sabrina Rattés most recent work, Archipels, will be presented as a large-scale projection on the museums façade.
To accompany the exhibition, WAM has produced a new publication introducing the artist's practice. The exhibition is curated by Anna Perälä of WAM.
Covering the period from the museums construction in the 1960s to the present day, the collection exhibition Primal Force Works from the Turku City Art Collection brings together sculptures by Finnish sculptor Wäinö Aaltonen alongside other key works from the collection.
Opening in the museums studio space, WAMx introduces a flexible, artist-led programme focused on collaboration and exchange. Its activities bring together different artistic disciplines and practitioners, emphasising the potential of art to engage with and influence society.
Collaboration in Venice 2028
WAM will be the main partner of Frame Contemporary Art Finland at the Pavilion of Finland at the 62nd Venice Biennale in 2028. Through this partnership, WAM will present the Biennale exhibition to Finnish audiences following its presentation in Venice.
Frame Contemporary Art Finland is the commissioner of the Pavilion of Finland at the Venice Art Biennale.
