INDIANAPOLIS, IN.- Rise Through Everything: Geometry, Rhythm, and Gesture unites visionary modern and contemporary Black artists who have transformed art on paper to cite cultural knowledge, express lived experiences, and engage in radical acts of self-definition.

This exhibition, curated by Associate Curator of Works on Paper, Anna Stein, features 16 prints, photographs, drawings, and collages, including works from Yashua Klos, Derrick Adams and Ayana Jackson.

“Perhaps my favorite thing about this exhibition is how many stunning additions to our collection it debuts,” said Stein. “Ten of the works are new acquisitions that really showcase the direction we are taking at Newfields with the experiences we are crafting and stories we are telling.”

Placing newer voices alongside established masters, Rise Through Everything creates a dialogue that allows guests to experience how artists from across generations and localities use structural geometries, rhythmic patterning and bodily gestures to challenge conventions and create new narratives of memory, identity and creative possibility.

Description of image

Together, these works show that paper is more than just material; it is a dynamic arena where artistic traditions collide and intersect, challenging viewers’ preconceptions and perceptions while foregrounding the brilliance, power, and vastness of Black creativity and expression.

Opening August 21, 2026, in the Golden gallery, Rise Through Everything: Geometry, Rhythm, and Gesture will be included with General Admission to Newfields until it closes in the spring of 2027. Advance tickets are not required but are encouraged.
