ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA.- Russian police recovered a stolen painting by Marc Chagall at a restaurant while it was being given to smugglers in St. Petersburg. According to the St. Petersburg Times, the work titled "Khasid" was stolen from a private collection four years ago and is valued at around $1 million.
St. Peterburg police stated, "This piece of art has come through a long chain of mediators, from second-hand dealers to rather important people from Moscow's Rublyovskoye Shosse who owned the picture for a while."
The State Russian Museum is currently showing the largest exhibit ever of Chagall's works in the country on view through September 30, 2005.
