Burrell Collection Presents Venus Rising |
Titian, Venus Rising from the Sea ('Venus Anadyomene').
GLASGOW.- The Burrell Collection presents Venus Rising: Touring Exhibition, on view through Sunday, 14 August, 2005. For the next few months, Titians Venus Anadyomene (Venus Rising from the Sea), which was recently acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland with the generous help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Scottish Executive and National Art Collections Fund (including a contribution from the Wolfson Foundation), is on view at several different venues around the country.
Having attracted large numbers of visitors to Duff House, our premier partner gallery in Banff where she was exhibited for seven weeks, Titians Venus is the focal point of a ground-breaking National Galleries of Scotland touring exhibition called Venus Rising.
This exhibition explores the familiar theme of the nude in western art, by comparing artworks dating from classical antiquity to the late twentieth century. Gallery visitors in Inverness, Glasgow and Newcastle will be able to view Titians Venus in conjunction with such diverse works as Venus and Cupid (c.1530), by Lucas Cranach the Elder, The Tub (c.1886), by Edgar Degas, La Représentation (1937) by René Magritte, and Bather Wringing Her Hair (1952) by Pablo Picasso.
