NEW YORK, NY.- Sotheby’s announced today that Alexander Kader and Margaret Schwartz have been appointed Co-Worldwide Heads of European Sculpture & Works of Art. The appointments come as Sotheby’s further strengthens its global Sculpture department, an area of great strength and importance.

Alex joined Sotheby’s in 1996 from the Victoria & Albert Museum. Trained as a medievalist at the Courtauld Institute of Art, Alex has published on Baroque and 19th century sculpture and was made a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2016. He has been head of the London department since 2000, working closely with the other European selling locations, most notably, in recent years, with Paris and Milan. Alex has been behind many notable sculpture sales, having brought to the market a host of record-breaking works, not least that by Gianlorenzo Bernini, sold in 2002 for £2.1 million. He also served as Head of Sotheby’s UK Regional Business from 2008-2010.

Margi’s experience in the fields of works of art and sculpture is unmatched and extends over nearly three decades. Her sales have featured numerous auction records for sculptors, including Donatello, the Della Robbia, Riemenschneider and Messerschmidt. She joined Sotheby’s in 1986, became Head of the European Works of Art Department in 1992 and became an auctioneer in 2005. In 2016, Margi led the first Old Master Sculpture private selling exhibition at Sotheby’s, Glazed: The Legacy of the Della Robbia, which was a resounding success in New York.

Together Alex and Margi will continue to develop and nurture key relationships, and drive Sotheby’s strategy in North and South America and in Europe. In her new role, Margi will focus on high end consignments and collections and will continue to act as Worldwide Senior lead specialist for sculpture. In Europe, Alex will work closely with the London and Paris departments in order to bolster a pan-European sales strategy, which in turn will make for enhanced strength and growth.

Margi’s and Alex’s appointments come as Sotheby’s continues to strengthen its global teams. In Paris, Ulrike Goetz continues to run the department and sales in Paris, together with Alex; in London, Chris Mason continues as Head of Sales; in Milan, Francesco Morroni continues his work focusing on top level sculpture consignments and provides international expertise on Maiolica and Doccia; in Cologne, Herbert van Mierlo provides valuable specialist knowledge in Northern European sculpture, amongst other responsibilities.
