DALLAS, TX.- Battled-scarred flags were hot items in the 2016 auction season.
Heritage Auctions sold four battle flags in 2016 for more than $625,000. Civil War Era Henry rifles also were coveted pieces, with two models occupying the top three gun sales of the year.
The sale of the year was a 48-star Flag flown from Landing Craft Control 60 on D-Day. LCC 60 led the Utah Beach invasion and the first Allied vehicle to land at Normandy. The bullet hole-filled flag made national headlines when it sold just six days after the 75th anniversary of the fateful landings. The flag, perhaps the most significant relic of D-Day in private hands, sold for $514,000.
The Utah Beach flag was one of three D-Day flags sold by Heritage in 2016. An Omaha Beach 48-Star Flag brought $45,000 in December. The flag was flown from an LCT Landing Craft during the invasion and retrieved by its 22-year-old commander as a souvenir. A Royal Navy Ensign was also sold in the December auction. It flew from the SS Empire Crossbow, which that landed at Utah Beach. The ensign realized $27,500.
A Confederate Second National Flag, "The Stainless Banner," soared past its pre-auction estimate, selling for $40,000. Union soldiers captured the flag at Battery Bee Feb. 16, 1865, in. The flag is entirely hand-stitched and remains exactly as it was when withdrawn from Battery Bee.
Henry rifles were popular arms in 2016. The Henry repeating rifle was one of the most revered weapons 19th-Century America. The lever-action rifle the weapon of choice for the Union soldiers who could get their hands on one and was later developed into the renowned Winchester rifle. A Model 1860 Henry Rifle inscribed to Union General Edward McCook was the leading gun sale of 2016, realizing $62,500. It was later presented to King Kalakaua and Princess Kawananakoa of Hawaiian Royalty. A well-preserved 1860 Henry Rifle soared to five times its opening bid, bringing $25,000. The rifle displayed no more than light scuffs and handling wear, and still had its four-piece metal cleaning rod.
