NEW YORK, NY.- Leading American frame maker Eli Wilner and Orientalist art expert Emily M. Weeks, Ph.D. will publish an article on the Orientalist picture frame in Fine Art Connoisseur magazine in March 2017. A book on the subject - the first comprehensive study of the Orientalist picture frame from the Renaissance to the present day, with a particular emphasis on American, British, and European frames from the second half of the nineteenth century – is also planned.

The forthcoming book Framing the Orient will offer an introduction to the fascinating complexity of this largely unrecognized art form, and will feature both artist-made and commercially marketed attributive frames. As arguably the best example in frame history of how frames act as critically important and influential stage settings for the artworks they house, Orientalist frames will be shown to be distinctive, calculated, and often deeply personal creations, which also reflect the architecture, politics, and society around them.

These publications are the latest fruits of Eli Wilner & Company’s long standing commitment to expanding the scholarship and appreciation of frame history. Mr. Wilner is the author of numerous of articles on period frames as well as the books Antique American Frames: Identification and Price Guide, published by Harper Collins, and The Gilded Edge, published by Chronicle Books.
