WASHINGTON, DC.- The Smithsonian American Art Museum announced today that Robin Veder will join its staff Jan. 9, 2017, as the executive editor of American Art, the museum’s peer-reviewed journal for new scholarship. Veder comes to the museum from Pennsylvania State University in Harrisburg, PA, where she held a position as tenured associate professor of humanities, art history and visual culture from 2010 through 2016 and as an assistant professor from 2004 to 2010.

American Art is produced by the museum’s Research and Scholars Center and is copublished with the University of Chicago Press. It seeks to promote sound scholarship and thoughtprovoking interpretation on topics in the fine arts, popular culture, public art, film, electronic multimedia, decorative arts and craft from the pre-colonial period to the present day.

“Since its inception in 1987, American Art has been an indispensable resource for scholars, collectors and museumgoers who want to enrich their understanding of American art and culture,” said Christine Hennessey, chief of the museum’s Research and Scholars Center. “We are pleased to welcome Robin as the new executive editor and look forward to seeing her shape the journal in years to come.”

Veder received her doctorate in American Studies from the College of William and Mary, and has held post-doctoral fellowships at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center for American Modernism, Harvard University’s Garden and Landscape Studies Program at Dumbarton Oaks and the Institute for Advanced Study at Durham University in the U.K.

She has published extensively on transatlantic art history, visual culture, history of the body and landscape studies of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Her book, The Living Line: Modern Art and the Economy of Energy, was published in Dartmouth’s Visual Culture Series in 2015. Other publications include articles in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, American Art, Visual Resources, Journal of Victorian Culture, Modernism/Modernity and International Journal of the History of Sport.
