NEW YORK, NY.- Christie’s announces the fall 2016 season of FIRST OPEN | New York the cross-category auction series—spanning Post-War and Contemporary Art, Editions, Photographs and Design—September 20 through September 30.

Launched 10 years ago as a single sale, FIRST OPEN originally owed its name to the fact that the auction 'opened' the season for Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie's welcoming new collectors. This September, FIRST OPEN | New York builds on that concept by presenting an auction series with two live auctions and three online sales encompassing some of the most sought-after artists of today offered at accessible price points.

The fall season of FIRST OPEN | New York is led by FIRST OPEN | Home, at 6:30pm on Tuesday, September 27, over 100 curated lots of Design, Photographs, Post-War and Contemporary Art, and Editions with estimates ranging from $300 to $300,000. Highlighting the sale are works by designers Sam Maloof (1916-2009), the self-taught California furniture-maker, Milanese artist Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988), Brazilian brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana, Italian architect Gaetano Pesce (b. 1939), interspersed with an array of photographs including works by Massimo Vitali (b. 1944), Hiroshi Sugimoto (b. 1948), and David Hockney (b.1937), colorful editions by Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), Keith Haring (1958-1990), Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959), and Josef Albers (1888-1976), and whimsical statement pieces such as An Urban Bocce Set made by Chanel.

FIRST OPEN | Post-War & Contemporary Art will take place on September 28, and includes over 360 lots that range in estimate from $600 to $1,200,000. Among the highlights is the selection of “Small Treasures, Big Pleasures—Pairings of Desire,” a group of small works by some of the most influential and innovative artists of the past fifty years. From the beguiling box constructions of Joseph Cornell to the innovative painterly practice of Helen Frankenthaler, this carefully curated group encompasses high impact examples with intimate dimensions, presenting collectors with the opportunity to acquire vital works at an approachable price point. The sale is led by Richard Prince’s Untitled (Cowboy), 1999 ($800,000-1,200,000). Additional highlights include works from Keith Haring, Ed Ruscha, Willem de Kooning, Tauba Auerbach, Kehinde Wiley, Alice Neel and Martin Wong.

Complementing the live auctions are three online sales, FIRST OPEN | Photographs, September 20-29, FIRST OPEN | Post-War and Contemporary Art, September 20-30, and FIRST OPEN | Editions, September 20-30, all of which will be on view concurrently with the live auction exhibitions. Also happening concurrently is the related sale, Thiebaud from Thiebaud: Prints and Works on Paper from the Private Studio of Wayne Thiebaud on Thursday, September 29.

In all, FIRST OPEN | New York will offer over one-thousand lots with works ranging from $300 to $1,200,000 in estimate. The preview reception will take place at the New York galleries on Monday, September 26 at 7:30pm.
