LOS ANGELES, CA.- Los Angeles Modern Auctions, the premier auction house on the West Coast to buy and sell Modern and Contemporary Art & Design, announces that its upcoming Modern Art & Design Auction will take place on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 12pm (PT).

The curated auction will represent some of the most coveted examples of abstract artwork, including Ad Reinhardt’s Abstract Painting, a significant 1958 work from the artist’s pivotal black series. In addition, works by Abstract luminaries including John McLaughlin, Sol LeWitt, Charles Arnoldi, Sylvia Mangold, Uta Barth, Ed Moses, Larry Bell, June Harwood, and Sam Francis will line the showroom walls.

Abstract Painting, the top lot in the sale, will go to auction for the first time this October. Reinhardt himself regarded his black series as his “ultimate paintings,” marking the apogee of years of experimentation. Black paintings by Reinhardt are in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tate, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Additional fine art offerings include two oil paintings by John McLaughlin dating from 1953 and 1955, a Charles Arnoldi acrylic on wood relief, a screenprint of James Dean by Andy Warhol, a selection of works on paper by Sam Francis, a resin sculpture by De Wain Valentine, paintings by Ed Moses, and works by Roy Lichtenstein.

Design offerings include a Jean Royère “Tour Eiffel” chandelier, a Paul László decorated screen, a Sam Maloof rocking chair and desk, Billy Haines lounge armchairs, a Hans Wegner “Hammock” chaise, a Milo Baughman desk, and a selection of California ceramics including works by Gertrud and Otto Natzler, Peter Voulkos, and Stan Bitters.

The October 9, 2016 Modern Art & Design Auction will be conducted at the LAMA showroom: 16145 Hart Street, Van Nuys, CA 91406 and will start at 12pm (PT). Auction Preview: September 26–October 8, 2016; open daily 10am–6pm.
