MARGATE.- Turner Contemporary has become one of the leading galleries in the UK. In April 2016, the gallery marked its fifth anniversary and on 7 June celebrated two million visits. With this new chapter in the gallery’s history, Turner Contemporary is very proud to announce the appointment of Clive Stevens as our new Chair.

Clive Stevens, is a founding trustee and has been Vice Chair of the gallery since 2008. Clive qualified as a Chartered Accountant and became a partner in Kreston Reeves in 1989. He was subsequently promoted to Managing Director of the firm in 1995 and held that post until the end of 2013. He currently serves as the firm’s Chairman. Under his leadership, the firm has grown to become one of the Top 25 accounting firms in the UK employing 500 people with a turnover in excess of £30 million. Clive’s appointment was agreed at a recent Board meeting following the resignation of Stephen Sunnucks for personal reasons.

Turner Contemporary has experienced unprecedented success in its short history. Since opening in 2011, the gallery has welcomed over two million visits, contributed over £41 million into the local economy through tourism and inward investment, and engaged over 100,000 people with its learning programme and activities.

Through its work, the gallery has demonstrated the power of art to transform people and places, leading the vital regeneration of Margate. The gallery has gone from strength to strength, with exceptional visit figures and innovative projects that create deep engagement with its audiences. The gallery has programmed a major show of works by JMW Turner for the autumn 2016 season. The exhibition, JMW Turner: Adventures in Colour opens on Saturday 8 October and brings together more than 80 watercolours and 20 oil paintings. There will also be an opportunity to see John Akomfrah’s extraordinary three-screen video installation, Vertigo Sea first shown at the Venice Biennale last year. In addition, Turner Contemporary is working closely with colleagues at the British Museum on a commission with artist Hannah Lees who will make a new artwork linked to the history of the Roman Pudding Pan shipwreck off the coast of Reculver.
